Post Quote for a head gasket fix....or lack thereof...

Guys, I called up the local "import car service" place today. I found them in the yellow pages, they had a 968 cab on the ad so I figured I'd at least call them up. I just wanted to get a rough estimate of what it would cost.

The guy's response was "I'll tell you what, that's a little bit too heavy for me. I used to do that but not anymore."

Is a headgasket fix really THAT hard? And for him to turn it down right away.... it just seemed odd.

??

I've never heard of repairing a head gasket, is it really possible? I consider gaskets throw away items, if it goes out, it wouldn't be as strong if you tried to tape or glue it (not trying to be offensive) back to working order. I'm not sure for prices on '89 gasket set, but for my '83 944 they aren't bad, I'd just buy the whole engine gasket set and be prepared for any o-ring, paper or steel gasket, or seal that decides to go out. Good luck.

Maybe he has a bad back and cannot lift the head off the block. The head is pretty darn heavy, and from that angle it is unwieldy aswell.

Headgasket job is easier than the clutch I think. Count on about 10-hours. Not terribly difficult and you don't get quite as dirty as doing the clutch.

Tabor,
Any estimate on how much the head actually weighs?

tt9714,

Well, I just weighed my 968 head, and without cams or a valve cover it came out to 45lbs.

Matt,

If you can change your own oil, than you can replace your head gasket. I bought my first 944 non-running with a broken timing belt and a bent exhaust valve. I took me just less than Danno's estimated ten hours and I'm happy to report 85K miles on the new head gasket/exhaust valve.

Sweet. Sounds good. Thanks.

FYI RLLFEST, I didn't mean "fix" as in duck tape, I just meant to do the repair. Thanks for the advice on the other seals!

Thanks, look forward to diving into this new project... The good news is that this is keeping Argento in a nice warm garage while the Acura takes the college/commuter beating up here in Greenville...
