Wheel Bearings
Hi guys,
How much should it cost to get my rear wheel bearings changed, both parts and labor? How many hours is this job in the book?
Thanks,
Mike

I don't know about the factory rates, I recently did my fronts, with a little help. For all four of the front bearings was $140 I think, so I bought some extras and used my $100 (off a $200 purchase) coupon. I then dissasembled the hubs and cleaned them up. I took the hubs to a local import shop and had the outer races pressed out/in, which was .5 labor and a spluge of grease for a total of $38. Reassembly was a no brainer, making sure to keep them clean and loaded with lube. I tensioned them as I was taught at a recent Steinel tech open house, and presto, new bearings for under a Benjamin with a nice coupon from the PCA. The only specialty tool you might need would be the 10mm allen head for the caliper, and that ****** was TIGHT! I broke a craftsman 3/8 drive version, now I have the better piece.
If a dealer did it, I wouldn't be surprised if it was a 2 hr job at $80/per and $140 parts, so $300, but thats just a guess. Of course, the rears could be different.

I just did both the rear bearings in my 87 951 (1 on each side).
You have to remove the rear control arms, then to have the old bearings removed and the new bearings pressed; cost me $70 per side labor and $80 a piece for the bearings. Good luck.

I just did the rears on my 83 na, the bearings and seals are VW part numbers and are probaly available locally. I bought the bearings from a local bearing supplier and the seals from www.the-best-source.com as we buy a couple million$$ in bearings at work and they sold them to me cheap. The bearings are fairly easy to replace in the car, just ensure you correctly seat the bearings and clean ALL of the old grease out. Clean up the faces of the spacers by lapping them and bolt it all together. You can actually follow the Haynes version and get it done.
Good luck

Cost me $51 labor per side and ~$40 per side for parts.
Note: That labor was not for the whole job. That was just to press the old bearings out and the new ones in.

Need to know what year you have?
Late = Good guess - shop rate = 3 hours for both (1.8 for one). Parts should be ~$40-50 each.
Early = 1 hour per side, no special tools needed. Most folks would do these themselves. Parts still around the same as late cars, though there are two bearings.
Good Luck!
