your mangled bumper shocks alone should have netted you more than $500. hopefully there wont be a next time, but if there is, please use the spreadsheet I set up to get comps, etc.

This is the risk I take for paying only for what is mandated by the state of Michigan. PLPD (personal liability, property damage). The money saved in all the years of paying the minimum, should in theory, more than cover the cost of replacement of my $1000 car.
And yes - hopefully there won't be a next time. The problem with that wish is the fact that drivers just keep getting dumber and more distracted.

She smashed up your car, she - as in her insurance is responsible for the damage to your property. her company should have given you the $ to repair your car equal to the % she was at fault. each state's laws are a little different, but the general rule, and a look at your pictures makes me think her company owed you some $$.

If your car was completely uninsured and in your driveway, and someone hit it they are just as liable as if you had collision.

Tom - If you have a better way - I'd like to hear it.

That is how I got the $500. The maximum payment in small claims is $500. Her insurance had a mini-tort provision. Since she was more than 50% at fault - her insurance company paid out the $500. Had she not had the mini-tort coverage - my only option would have been to take her to small claims court.
I would have tried to work it out with her directly had it come to that. Regardless - it's a f#ucked up system. The car wasn't worth much - but it was certainly worth more than $500.

I have had "collision only" on a few cars in the past, but it seems crazy to go that route if the state takes away the OTHER person's liability. I was always gambling on my own skills not to screw up, and comforted if the other guy screws up I'd be indemnified. I certainly understand the premium savings, but in a city full of distracted drivers, ::shudder::. I wonder how it works if an Ohio insured driver goes up to Michigan and gets hit, or hits someone. I believe Pennsylvania may be another "no fault" state".

That's one effed up system. So this is how tort reform affects the ordinary guy? At least malpractice insurance will cost less for doctors.

Two shots of damage caused by the radiator getting knocked out in the impact and one shot of why a replacement shell was obtained 1.6 years ago.

Scott, we're more than happy to help with lift time for this project!
I'm especially glad that if Herbie was cast to take one for the team (Harco ;^), that you at least came out relatively unscathed.
We don't buy collision damage coverage for our (rather pampered, I'll admit) 944 either, the inevitable payout would be so small that the car is worth more as a parts containment vessel

We'll probably have one more dismantling party before I load the dune buggy on the trailer. Still need to get the rest of the interior out, the sunroof, the quarter windows, hatch, hood and doors. That will make for an interesting photo.
All you guys are invited.
