Default From Under the Manifold! (video)

searched and wasn't satisfied. there is a whining/whirring noise coming from right under my intake manifold. the noise is rpm-dependent and can be heard at all engine temperatures.

I know that a tight balance shaft belt or a dying water pump can make this sound, but neither of these are right under the intake manifold.

what could it be? you can hear it in this video. any constructive help is appreciated, as always! thanks.

My guess… under the Intake manifold would be the balance shaft. Get a Mechanics Stethoscope or make one and start probing about.

I would not run that engine any more without taking a look at the timing/balance shaft belts. How did this start, any other symptoms?

I've never heard a 944 make that noise. I'd check the balance shaft.
I doubt the ICV or injectors could make a noise like that.

thanks for the replies you guys. i have not been driving the car since i have gathered your advice. i don't know of any other symptoms. i just got the car a few weeks ago and it came to me like this. i know there are also noises that indicate a bad valve lifter (rpm-dependent clicking that is loudest when the engine is cold).

how can i make one of those stethoscopes? and where do i listen/what do i listen for?
or what if i take off the cover to examine the belts... is there anything i could look for?

you guys are helping a lot. thanks very much for this. my 944 will one day be a top ride, but for now it needs work.

oh ya, and if anyone wants more audio/video let me know!

Hold a piece of tubing to your ear and probe the other end around.
Good luck
