Post Emissions with no cat? (In North Carolina)

I have a 1986 944 turbo with chips. I'm getting ready to install a custom 3 inch turbo back with only a resonated 3 inch tip. My 1984 944 passes with flying colors, but on that car I split the converter housing, installed a straight pipe, incase they do a visual. To my knowledge they don't do this, but shops I ask around tell me that my car needs to 'look like' it's got a cat on. Anybody gone through an inspection in NC (wake county) with a test pipe or similar?
Thanks for any feedback,
Ahmet

Thank you so much! As soon as I wire in the damn headlights I'll head over there (the wiring loom is missing from the fuse panel!).

Should I mention your name (what's your name anyway)? BTW, I'm assuming I just need to keep quiet about not having a cat, and make sure it passes emissions right?

Thanks again.

Is there any special tuning adjustment to make to get the car to pass emissions without a cat, or will a normally tuned turbo typically pass?

I have actually been told if our cars are in good running condition they will pass emission even w/o the cat. Surprising, but I have heard it from a couple of people.

Random tidbit of info for the day, the ferrari f50 burns so clean that it actually bipasses the cats once the car gets warmed up.

lehtola, did you e-mail me ('bout this weekend in Raleigh)? Just trying to straighten out who I'm talking to.

I don't see why a properly running turbo wouldn't pass a static emission test if the NA does (and it definately passes with ease).
