Just had new timing belts, two rollers, waterpump (re-built), etc installed on the car 1800 klms (around 2700 miles) ago. I'm obviously due soon for a re-tensioning.
Started the car yesterday and heard two very quick high-pitched "squeak" noises that went away right after I heard them. It did this twice in one day. It only happened on start-up.
Could this be a starter thing? Or is it the belts?
I will also say I had just finished washing the car just before it did it the first time and then it sat for about 4 hours and did it again on the start-up after those 4 hours. Hasn't done it since (about 8 or 9 start-ups).
Any ideas????
I'm going in today for the belt re-tensioning
..... just incase.

Squeaking alternator or power-steering belt. If it squeaks when you turn the wheel, it's the power-steering. Tighten up the tension rods. Put out some mice traps ! <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

Thanks Danno,
That was my first guess. I figured the timing and toothed belts couldn't really "squeak".
Another question.....do the a/c and other smooth belts have to be re-tensioned at the same time as the timing belts??
Also, how long should a belt re-tensioning take??
The mechanic said it would be "an hour/hour and a half" - how close is he????.

You know, I have an interesting squeak that I haven't been able to locate yet.
When I start her up cold, no squeaking, but as soon as I press the clutch down, I'll hear a squeak squeak squeak that goes until I let up on the clutch. Only does it when the cars cold.
As an aside, I used to have a SQUEAL on start-up, was the power steering pump. Tightened up the belt, sounds great.

Uh oh... now THAT would be the pilot-bearing!
Hopefully whoever did your clutch last replaced that one. Would hate to go through a clutch-job just to replace an $11 bearing...

Mark,
Does the squeak you hear when engaging the clutch sound like it's coming from the back of the car?
Mine does this. I have a sound similar to a roller squeaking, but it's not coming from the engine area. When I push in on the clutch, and start moving - I get a squeak now and then.
I dunno???

Clutch...hmm, not sure if that has been done, ever.
It sounds like its coming from right in front of me (when I'm in the driver seat), and that's about all I can tell.
Pilot Bearing eh....all new clutch job you say? What happens if I just let it go bad? Will it only do this on start-up?
