it appears this is a thread where everyone agrees to disagree, you use whatever oil you want for the most part.

I'm surprised most of you are using heavy weight oil... Why?

I run 10w30 or 10w40 either penziol platinum or valvoline synthetic

New to p-cars, but I have had good luck with Mobil 1, Amsoil, and Pennzoil Platinum in my cars and motorcycles. I wouldn't worry about using any of them (or any of the other premium synthetics) in my 951. There's Mobil 1 going in it right now, and I'll probably use Amsoil in the future because they ship to my door and have both a high zinc formulation (http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/amo.aspx) and a euro-turbo formulation (http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/afl.aspx).

I need to read more to find out if 944s have had any of the camshaft problems that I've heard about in Porsches (and which a high-zinc oil can help alleviate).

valvoline 20-50 for me too. that's what the previous owner (and much smarter when it comes to these things) used, so i decided to keep it since it seems to be doing a great job, and is pretty inexpensive for how infrequent i drive!

for our previous 944 N/A (also got from the same previous owner) we ran Redline 20/50 synthetic.

i've never run a turbo. not an expert on turbos or anything containing the word, "Turbo."

anyway, your favorite synthetic: or Mobil 1 0w-40 winter. a heavier synthetic summer. the 0w-40 has a is designed for euro engines and has lot of zddp. for the summer Mobil 1 has even more of that good stuff.

the 0w-50 racing oil is even better. but it's 16 dollars a quart, and has A TON OF ZDDP.

Here you guys go. You don't have to read every single page but cover off the first few and then skim to the end. You'll get the gist.
Personally a 0w/30 or similar is insane in our cars unless you're living on Neptune.

Wait, what? Doesn't this qualify you as crazy? Please tell me that at least once you've thought about slapping a turbo or two on somewhere amongst your v-8's...

I must be bored as hell to get sucked into an "oil" thread..... Oh, wait a minute.. Yes, yes I am....

I use Mobile 1 15w50. Any of you that want to say "Mobile 1 has changed their formula", you are correct......on all of their street oils. 15w50 isn't recommended by any manufacturer anymore, so it is not considered an oil for street use. Meaning, its formula hasn't changed. If you want proof, look at their website. They post specs of every oil they make. 15w50 has the same levels of ZDDP that its always had...and about twice as much as their "new formula" oils.

I also change my oil at the Porsche recommended interval of 15k miles. My car uses 1 quart of oil every 5k miles, and 99% of that is my balance shaft leak. I also have had my oil tested at Blackstone Lab 3 times now. Every time, they say that because my engines wear is so low, there is absolutely NO fuel, or coolant, and very little metal in my oil, that I could increase the interval to 20k miles. I keep it at 15k anyway. I've posted the lab reports on RL before to prove it, but they aren't on this computer so I can't post them again.

I'm not saying to do this, or that. These are just my results. Porsche says you don't need to change the oil for 15k miles....on 1980s oil technology! With modern oil...ANY modern oil, I feel like these engines will run forever. There is no such thing as "bad" oil. None of them are paraffin based anymore, which is what makes the "sludge" on the TV ads. They all fight "sludge". They all have detergents. They are all slippery as hell.

Pick which oil you think has the prettiest bottle, buy 7 quarts of it, use a good filter, and stop worrying about it!
