Inexpensive Roll Cage Going in Monday !!
Well, I've prepped my car for the roll cage install. As you recall, I found a shop in Mooresville (Nascar country) that would install a full welded Chromoly light steel cage for $600. It will be the first Porsche this shop works on, but I have confidence of their quality. To prep my car, I've done the following. Removed the sun visors, head liner and padding over windows and above visors and on the a-pillars, took out both corner vents including the plastic duct behind the vent all the way back to the barn doors, pulled all the rear carpeting and folded back front carpet immediately in front of the doors, relocated the hatch button, hack sawed a metal braket that holds the rear hatch button, hack sawed a metal flange behind the passenger vent, removed the seat belt mechanisms in the b-pillars, disconnected the overhead light from the wires (will be relocating), and removed the passenger seat.
The cage should take about a week to install. I will post some pictures when its done and let you know how the quality is. I told the shop that several other 951s will probably get cages as well if he does a good job for the price he quoted.

It's called G & K Race Cars. It is on Broad Street in downtown Mooresville. It is really a hole in the wall, but the guys who work there are real friendly and competent. Here is the link.

Mike,
PCA Race Rules calls for the following minimum diameters and wall thickness for cars over 2500 pounds.
Mild Steel 1.75" x .095 or 1.50" x .120
G & K Race Cars will be installing a 1 5/8" x .120 mild steel bar. This complies with the regulations.
I have given a copy of the PCA roll bar specifications to the shop so that my car is compliant in all regards.

I have the same cage as the red car at VCI and it is a nice piece of work.
The interesting thing about the PCA rules is the material. They say mild steel. Most people don't have a clue as to how broad a spectrum that covers. It could be anything from an IF type HF welded tube to a piece of DOM 1010 seamless. The IF type, about 25 ksi Y.S., in a side impact would fold up like a toilet paper roll. But it sure would look nice going through tech. <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

Are you kidding? They had better come with a couple of hookers and a congressman for that price.

wow, thats a bunch of metal. why didn't they just build a tube chasis and bolt gt racing c/f panels to it. that would be awesome. imagine that conversation with your buddies. "hey guys, just got my forty point cage installed, the cool thing is, now i have an extra tub!"

Those are actually the best cages I've seen for a 924/944/968. They are really close to what I have planned for mine. I will almost certainly use X braces instead of NASCAR bars however. I just cannot believe the price. That's nuts. Way over priced.

There are no reason to use 4130 for a roll cage really.the cost is 3times the money and the weight is the same per foot.
The only place it can be used is where there is no rule on thickness.
It is ok to use if there is no rules at all like DE,but the car is useless to re-sell to someone that would like to race.
If you just are looking for your own safety then you can use a thinner wall tubing which is just as strong as the heavier wall stuff.
