Ok, I got my trans axle back from the shop it was a carry in. Was for replacement for 4th gear sychros. Found that 4th was hosed and needed a replacement gear. Went ahead and had them replace all the sychros and front and rear main. Got it put it in and noticed a New noise through all gears. Instead of taking it back out and down to the shop that I had the rebuild done at I had the car towed to them. Now the bearings the the axle went bad.
Heres my question, how do bearings go bad while a transmission is out of the car. I haven't received a quote for the replacement of the bearings as of yet, nor the r & r of the transmission. First bill for the sychro and gear work was right at 1000 bucks and I supplied all the parts.
Not wanting to slam the shop; I just would like some information on what could have caused the failure.

Do these guys regularly rebuild Porsche transaxles? There are many things that could go wrong in the hands of a shop unfamiliar with these boxes. Did they re-shim the ring & pinion? If so, it may not have been done properly and this could quickly lead to a pinion bearing failure.

Every lesson learned the hard way is never forgotten. A used trans is a toss of the dice, some good and some bad ones out there. If you can't do the work on these cars yourself you need to have deep pockets.
