Cool MAF S2 Vs N/A

Ok Here is the thought. I am going to attempt and place a modified K&N Air filter in the nose under the emblem of a 944 n/a. The S2 MAF is better suited for the job because it points directly tward this area. I need to know what is the difference between the two MAF devices and is it possible to switch one from a 944 S2 to a 944 N/A? Thanks in advance. Skip I Know your out there and could possibly answer this question for me. Any one else can chime in any time. Thanks in advance for the info.

Actually I think the the AFM for both cars is the same, but I would have to check my PET at home to confirm. The S2 set up is just located differently relative to the intake, straight shot into the intake vs. snaking around. Also there is a metal "neck" that extends from the AFM to the opening of the airbox.

Also, I believe that the early and the late N/A's have different AFM's. They're different part #'s and seem to recall trying a late AFM on and early '85, and it didn't work.

I think that's because the early AFM used 0-8v output vs. the 0-5v output of the later ones.

AFM Part No.

1987 NA, 944-606-121-01
1987 944S, 944-606-124-00
1990 944S2, 944-606-124-00
1987-89 Turbo, 951-606-121-01

I don't know what the actual differences are, but obviously... they are different.

OK Looked through my Parts and tech. ref. catalog. Unfortunately the AFM from the S2 and your '87 N/A have different part numbers. Your car is listed as 944 606 121 01 and the S2 is listed as 944 606 124 00.

If you want a better understanding on the layout of the S2 intake/AFM check out Tom Boerger's web site here:

944S2 Central

for pics of the cone filter modification. The engine bay is in plain view with the "neck" and AFM shown in relation to the intake manifold. Hope this gives you some ideas how to fab your intake.

Cheers,
