Have you looked into 944 Cup (versus spec)? I believe that the rules are more liberal on things like window glass and body parts. There are two paths to 944 Cup; one via PCA rules and one not. I'm just an observer, so I may be all wrong.

Great Lakes NASA has no 944 Cup races anymore....We are all racing GTS 1 now.

Yes when i started to build the car two years ago I wanted to do CUP but then this year came to realization that there are no "convenient" CUP races to Columbus ohio so spec or gts1 is probably the way to go. I do want to eventually do a cup event and I believe they ran with MORPCA at the Spring Club Race at Mid Ohio. The Cup director(Dave D) is a nice guy and sounds like they get a great turn out for their races.
