Default Need help diagnosing a problem

I was on my last lap of the evening when a very disturbing sound began to emit from the rear of my car. It's a very systematic sound, almost a "clang". When I accelerate the sound gets quieter, and when I am off the throttle the sound get louder. I can feel the clang in the shifter, and if I move off slowly I can feel the clang in the clutch pedal. At around 100km the sound is not so bad, and of course the sound gets faster as you accelerate. No fluids leaked, and other then the noise and sensations through the shifter, you don't really feel that anything is wrong. I was thinking it might be either drive shaft (CV joint?), or something wrong with the diff? The gears shift fine, and the clutch feels fine as well, so I am pretty sure it's not either one of those. Any ideas?

Odds suggest your cv joints are going bad.

The only thing is, it's damn loud! Maybe I am just use to the "clicking" sound that a front wheel drive CV joint makes. The sound is harsh, loud, and the sound is singular (no other sounds at the same time, nor is it a crunching/clicking sound), if that makes sense. Again, it sounds odd to me because I am use to the sound of front wheel drive CV joint clicking before it lets go. However, I hope you are correct. Probably less money then a diff!

I had a similar experience on an old Spitfire 1500, on the gas sound was good, drove good, but as soon as I let off the gas in the slightest it was like clang-clang-clang. For me it was the rear axle. Might be for you as well.

Mine clanked loud when they went. Do a search here for bad cv joints -- your description is similar to many others. Never can be sure with an online diagnosis, but that's my bet. If that's what it is, sometimes you can get extra life out of them by reversing them.
