Some people say its new Porsche drivers that dont wave (new as in the car is new), but I dont think thats true, because a 996 can driver flashed her lights at me (yes her, and yes sadly only her lights).

This is MADNESS!!! Why not apply this "wave theory" to all aspects of life? Should I wave like a monkey to some guy just because he has blonde hair like mine? Hey, maybe I'll wave at some girl who's wearing a watch!! I'll yell, "Hey, lady!! I wear a watch TOO!!"

Wow, ArcticCzar. I'm really not trying to offend you, but that is soooo narrow-minded. First of all, let's talk about choice. Most people don't choose their hair color - people do choose to drive a specific car from the '80s that requires thousands of dollars to maintain. Second, let's talk frequency. How many people have blonde hair? A bunch. How many people wear watches? A bunch. How many people drive a specific car from the '80s that requires thousands of dollars to maintain? A few. Even if we look at the overlapping portion of a Venn diagram - there are more people with blonde hair wearing watches than there are people driving cars like ours.

What I'm getting at is most people who drive a 924/944/951/etc. do it out of a love for the car. You don't buy one because it's practical. You don't buy one because it's cheap to maintain. You buy one because you understand what a great car this is and you're willing to put up with the maintenance. That's what generates a sense of community.

I don't waive to every Boxter, 996, etc. that goes by, but if I'm at a light next to a 944, I'd expect at least a nod of aknowledgement.

BUT, that's just me.

Again, I don't intend to offend.

In the US Spec cars, do the running lights not light up if you flash them with the headlight switch turned off?

These lights...

BTW, I am not driving, I am behind the camera...

I wonder if you are as stupid as I think you are.
I really hope not.

Not all 911 drivers have this view. I toyed around with a C2S on my way home from Winston-Salem. The other driver appeared to be having as much fun as I was ... until traffic slowed us down. I got a friendly smile / nod when we parted ways.

I think the primary issue has already been mentioned ... some people view it as just a car. My brother-in-law is a *perfect* example of this. He bought an '87 951 new and sold it this year with 80k miles on it. It was completely thrashed (Kool can back that up)! It was merely transportation for him. Then you have those people that buy the cars just as a status symbol ...

wave people, stop arguing!

seriously ive had some good experiences lately...
on the merrit parkway.. i was coming back from school and as i merged on to the highway i immediately found myself behind a late 996 turbo. i follwed him all the way to my exit, when i got off, he initiated the wave from up ahead, i hope he saw me wave back!
couple days later i find myself behind a late 70s yellow 911. followed him to his exit, this time i initiated the wave from behind and he waved as he went down the offramp. see? cool!
i never initiate with boxsters, thats a joke.

anyway.. that was me near merrit 7 yesterday? weird.. at the shell station? whos stalking me.. uh oh......

Simon - is your car white?

To all others - If I could, I would delete my original post as it has degenerated beyond saving. Too much bickering on a solemn day of rememberance.

Dales944 - I don't want to upset you, but thinking for myself - not like a sheep - and questioning your preference for such a pinpoint instance of rarity is the exact opposite of "narrow-minded"; but thank you for making my point. Even if you didn't mean to. And sweanders - since you use "think" and "stupid" in the same sentence, I imagine you're only 50% right. Keep waving!!!

*chuckles* wow, such differeing thoughts on mearly being a pleasent person. Maybe my view (I smile at everyone, and wave often at anything that's cool) stems from growing up in Wyoming. When you're driving down the road there, you wave at EVERYONE - doesn't matter if you're ain a beat-up 52 Chevy pick-up or a MB SLK (fwiw, I was the chevy driver, and the MB driver initiated the wave).

I've yet to find the same feeling from people in/around cities (anything larger than 80~100k people) - they just seem hard and cold, like they could care less if you lived or died. I still often wave, smile and later laugh at them trying to figgure out why someone would be friendly for no apparent reason.

Just goes back to whos parents taught them the Golden Rule... "Treat others how YOU want to be treated".

I'll be damned! Now I will flash other Porsches if I get the chance. Thanks!

I drive around town with my lights on all the time. I only flash other 944's. And almost univerally the other driver responds.
