Your differential bearings are on their way out, stop driving it before it gets worse. I just replaced mine that had a similar issue. I started the process on my blog, but I haven't finished uploaded the completed pictures yet.

That part is usually referred to as the inner "stub axle" (there's an outer stub axle that attaches to the hub at the wheel). If you replace the bearing, make sure you also get new radial seals for the stub axle. They're not expensive.

Correct, when the output shafts/stub axles are able to wobble due to a worn differential bearing, the seal will definitely leak.
If you are doing the job you will need:
Left and Right differential bearings
Input shaft seal x 1
Output shaft seals x 2
Selector shaft gasket x 1
Loctite 574 to reseal the case. (i used VW's case sealant instead)
Approx. 2 liters of gear lube.
Less than 100 bucks in parts and some of your time and you can have it repaired in no time. Obviously you will need to drop the transaxle to do the job.

If you need help sourcing the parts, send me a PM. I don't have the Audi gearbox stuff listed with my transaxle rebuild kits, but I can get all of those parts too.
