Default Crazy electrical problems - update: fixed!

Looking for the magic bullet here...

The following are not functioning:

Turn signals
Reverse lights
Pop-up headlight motor
Rear hatch release motor
Cigarette lighter/ clock
Fog lights

Is there a ground terminal or some wild relay that would knock all of this stuff out at once? So far I haven't had enough time to properly trace this down. Looking for help from the brain-power of Rennlist.

We stripped out the interior to clean things up and pulled out the old phone related junk. There is a chance this is the root cause. Nothing is obvious though. All fuses check out fine.

Got any ideas??

Check relay G14 which is the Term X relay does it energize?
If it energized the there should be 12vdc on pins 30 and 87
good luck

Ah - yes. That could answer some of it.

I'm looking at the circuit diagram and the back-up lights are directly powered by that relay and no doubt a few other things that I am unable to trace. A lot of things lead to the "bridge adapter" (G6). Any thoughts on what that is?

I'll probably just swap out the questionable relays. That should work, right?

Thanks for the lead. It has to be something simple like this. There is no way all of these things will go bad at the same time.

My understanding is that bridge adapters are used to interconnect wiring and I think of the as a terminal strip.
Good luck

teh bridge adapter is under the hood, drivers side firewall and has a black cover over it (IIRC) it is a junction for some of the electrical harnesses to the relay pannel IIRC..

I just visited Clark's Garage to see if there was anything there to solve this.

It identifies Relay X as well - but...

These things are still working:

Wipers
Electric mirrors
Electric windows
Blower motor
Cooling fan

Only the reverse lights match with that diagnosis.

So that may not be the problem.

Scott - The bridge adapter is just a relay that gets energized when the ignition is switched on. Another culprit may be the ignition switch itself. Another thing to keep in mind is that the entire fusebox gets power from the 8ish gauge wires running directly to the battery +, (there are 2 on the 968; there may be only one on the 85.5's)

I find it really helps to print out the wiring diagrams on large paper (11x17) and tape them together in the appropriate sheets.

It really helps to have the Factory Service Manual hard copy, as all the electrical diagrams are clear as day, and already printed on 11x17 fold out pages...

FWIW, I have 2 copies of the FSM, one I bought to use on my N/A and the set that came with my 951 when I bought it...

Others have told me the PDF copies of the FSM do not have the resolution to show ALL the electrical diagram information (such as the wire color code markings at the BOTTOM of each page...) but I have not seen the PDF copies to know for myself...

I have the FSM on CD and on my laptop. I have printed out the circuit diagrams in 11 x 17 format. So far that is not a stumbling block.

Figuring out why the damn electrons don't want to follow the right path is...

I'll show you how to find the right path tomorrow night. I'm sure we can get some crayons and a placemat maze to practice on.
This stuff really isn't hard, you just have to think like a German engineer. Lots of beer (German or otherwise) helps.

Good call. Obviously it will be Mexican beer.

Stop by Casa de Harco before the meeting if you are running early.

Problem solved.

On the back side of the central electrical box the connector linking G6 (bridge adapter) and G12 to the rest of the world was not connected.

I knew it had to be something very basic. It doesn't get much more basic than a disconnected connector.

By the way - G12 is identified as: 'complementary driving lights'. So I'm assuming those are the ones that constantly praise you for your outstanding driving. I did notice that function wasn't active. It will be nice to have that back...

Are you talking about the back of the fuse panel?
