Post ** HELP: Transmission Rebuild.

The drama continues:

I took my 1987 944 N/A to Midwest Eurosport last week and they are now telling me that the noise I was getting was from the transmission and not the clutch. The car is not drivable until this is fixed.

My problem is the owner qouted me $2000-$2500 for a rebuild on the trans. This seem steep. How much should I be paying a reputable shop for a rebuild, and how much would a new/used tranny cost instead?

thanks...

I'm going thru the same thing. If you don't need LSD (not the drug), Ian at www.944online.com has rebuilt N/A transmissions for $1250 plus exchange. This includes new pinion, bearings, and seals. This should be a straight-forward, easy swap according to many on this board.

I'm waiting to see if my LSD tranny can be rebuilt for cheaper than $1800. If not, then I'm calling Ian.......

I just had my syncro done in my 88 944 Turbo S.

Gears were good just syncros. Cost was about $650. This was from a local guy that is highly respected, but not known for being cheap.

FYI labor was about $400.. the rest were the 5 syncros and assorted seals and redline fluid. Note I pulled the box from the car myself and took it too him so labor was the box teardown & rebuild only.

Thanks guys...

Im going to call the guy tomorrow to speak about his prices. He seems to be giving me high end quotes for everything I need done to this car. Ive heard good things about this shop, but here I am walking in 21 years old asking this guy to fix my car, and I think he might be taking advantage of my situation: my daily driver is broken and I need her fixed.

I would rather purchase a new trans and have it shipped out to him and have him install it. I have about $3k to get my car up and running again, lets see how things go.

I called this guy again today and he is still quoting around 2k-3k depending on the problem with the transaxle.

Can anybody give me a frame of reference to what the price SHOULD be. Im trying to call Ian @ 944online.com to see what I can get from him...

thanks!

Coincidently I was quoted for a transmission job just yesterday.

"Pete's gear shop", Castro Valley, CA, 510-537-9514 quoted $400 + parts for a 944 transmission.

I don't know these guys personally but were recommended by someone who had work done there.

Karl.
