Default accelaration problem and popping sound coming from exhaust

I have a 1984 n/a.
first problem
The car starts and idles fine, but when i go to accelerate for the first time it will stutter for a few seconds and then wake up and go. it then accelerates fine.

second problem
after i have been driving the car for about 10-15 minutes i hear a popping sound coming from the exhaust. it usually happens on deceleration, but sometimes occurs on acceleration as well.

i have been using quality fuel from many different stations over an extended period of time and it still has the problems so i don't believe its a fuel quality problem

what are your thoughts and opinions on what may be causing this

Have you checked the fuel pressure?

pull the vacuum lines off the damper and FPR and check them for signs of fuel in them (the lines) if you find fuel you have found your bad FPR or Damper...

Check your timing to make sure it is still lined up at TDC #1..

Check you Idle stab system to make sure it is functioning... quick test is to unplug the actuator while the car is running.... if the idle changes (for the worse) it is working...

check you spark plugs..

check your fuel pressure (and fuel filter)

Also check your grounds. Bad grounds can result in a rich condition=**** idle=backfire

Catalytic converter catylist worn down and turning sideways.
It's honeycomb, so if it turns, it will clog exhaust flow.
I have had this happen before.
drop rear exhaust pipe and look up in there.
to fix, get some rebar from the local hardware (home depot etc.. ) and break apart till it flies out.
enjoy added acceleration

I have the exhaust out already so ill check it out in the morning.
Unfortunately its a Ca car so if it is the cat will have to be replaced.

Any good Ca legal hi flow cat options?
I was thinking about putting one on anyways.

I just found out my clutch parts have come in so this will probably get pushed back till next week or so
as car is lifted and everything has been dropped to get to clutch
