lug nut question.
as part of my dismantling adventures today i pulled the wheels off (somehow never had to till now). The lug nuts are psychotically light, to they point that you'd swear they were plastic if you picked one up. Are these really stock? or aftermarket. I can only assume they are titanium or some other light material.
i apologize if this is a silly question, i'm just used to steel lugs on all the cars i've played with.

probably aluminum ones.
i just worked on a guy's 944 turbo and he had same kind...i could toss at yer head and u won't feel a hit. i advised him to get the open steel ones.

Cool, thanks. They feel light to the point that i'd be scared using them. If they are aluminum i'd be scared using them on steel bolts.
somewhere along the line i think an owner replaced security keyed ones with open ended ones of the same material, because each wheel has 4 closed ended ones, and one longer open ended one.

the aluminum ones are nice for a street car especially if the car sits outside as they dont rust. however on my DE car i run open steels even when i drive the car on the street.

i assume you mean steel base as in the studs themselves, not that the nuts have steel and aluminum in them. Steel on aluminum is bad, aluminum loses, which is why i'm amazed that is what they are.

imo the nuts are fine, as long as installed properly, clean threads, evenly torqued to spec

I've driven the closed aluminum versions extremely hard in mountain driving for many many years and never had one fail, loosen, or not torque correctly. I suppose the open nuts are a security issue for track use though and are a better option.

The aluminium nuts are very strong...mine was torqued too high with air gun so I was forced to use a breaking bar 1 meter long to loose them...now some of them are no more straight if you can believe this!?! still use them
