Default Starts then cuts out--timing or fuel? Help!

OK, I'm at a loss. I've being doing work on my car, which was running fine before (!!)--replaced timing belts, seals, and motor mounts. I've put it back together and crank it does, but it only runs for a second then cuts out. Also it's making a kind of rasping sound from the engine. Now, I need to figure out just how I've made things worse--does this sound like a timing problem, or might I have raised the engine too much (when doing these blasted mounts) and somehow messed with the fuel lines? Any advice or suggestions would help. I'm a novice. Also, I noticed when taking things apart that the right gear carrier, into which the balance shaft juts out (and into which the seal and metal sleeve goes) was _slightly_ warped inside, not perfectly circular.) Could this be my rasping problem? Please help!

Did you plug your air flow meter back in?
I forget to plug it back in every single time I do any work in there.
