I am going to replace the front and rear shocks on my 85.5 NA 944, basic Koni's I have heard are a very ruff ride and KYB's will be must closer to OEM but still have enough in them to let you run hard from time to time ( I love this car in the turns, I wont be doing much in the way of "Racing" but might go a little hard on the street).
Any one running the KYB's and what do you think
or is there a third option?
parts stores with the best prices? Used sets?

I replaced all the stuff in my N/A with sachs OEM replacement parts, my 951 is full Koni with coil overs..
Not sure why someone would say the Konis are a rough ride... they are adjustable... I have been driving the **** out of my 951, and recently started driving the N/A again, and am finding the N/A a little too spongy... but still fun to drive.
as far as selection, new shocks and struts are gonna make you sit back and say WOW no mater what you use... there will be lots of opinions out there... if you like the way she handles use OEM replacement parts, if you want more of a sport ride, the Konis are a good set, and there are many other options available...
Paragon is having a sale right now...

nice deal... there is a thread about a "saved" page containing info to help select spring rates... you can stick with stock style spring rates, or go stiffer, my 951 I am running 300lb rate fronts, and will be upgrading to 550lb rate rears.... and doing the torsion bar delete... my N/A will stick with what it has for the time being, but this deal is almost good enough to tempt me to put this setup on her too...

I Just installed Koni Yellows (adjustable) on all 4 corners of my '88 N/A and I think they are great. I have them set at the softest setting and they do not rattle your bones. I find them to make the car handle great yet still have a comfortable ride.
I have not yet tried exparementing with the stiffness settings but I bet if you set them to the hardest setting they will rattle your bones.
I got mine from Paragon and am very happy. I Purchased the conversion option so I did not ahve to cut the original struts and they look great.

I recently joined the Koni Yellow club....I love em !
They are definately not too stiff....particularly in the softer settings.
The fronts are adjustable easily...in the flick of a wrist....the rears have to be disconnected to be adjusted....my rears are set to a mid-point setting...and right now the fronts are on the softer side....I will be playing with them prior to my first DE this season (which is late this year...it won't be until july !).....but definately think Koni !

Yeah, don't worry one bit about konis being uncomfortable.
I run mine adjusted maybe 20% up from full soft, Merrit and I95, 70 miles every day, NYC sometimes - it's fine.

Konis are not rough; on the soft setting they feel just a little bit firmer than the stock Sachs/Boge. On the stiff setting, it feels fantastic on curvy backroads. Just that flexibility alone is worth it, let alone the actual improvement in handling over OE or KYB.
I put KYBs on my '84 and they're OK... They are definitely firmer than the OE shocks though. They feel as harsh as the konis on medium, but they handle like the OE Sachs shocks... so an overall lose/lose. They only reason I don't totally regret it is that they were very cheap.
