Was cleaning out the garage over the weekend and found the OEM cat for my car. Being that we don't have emissions testing in MI I don't really have much use for it. All of the material is intact and you can still see that "light shine" thru it.

Any ideas on what its worth? Or is it more worth just keeping?

thanks

If you don't need it.. the Platinum, Palladium, and Rhodium are worth a lot of money.
The DEC OEM catalytic converters are around $350-400 new.

Depends on how much use that cat got before it was removed.

The car had approximately 45K on it when it was taken off. Everything is solid inside and when you hold it up to a light there is that cat shine coming thru so i know its not plugged at all.

Is there any way to effectively extract the precious metals short of smashing the honeycomb to dust?

yer not gonna be claiming much if u try to sell off the precious metals. because you're not a certified business that reclaims those. there are junkyards that buy used cats for $100 or so.

but it's worth something to the right person that has a busted cat and needs a new one.

I can't imagine it would be worth much, the stock cats are not the best and you can easily pass emmisions with a $70 high flow aftermarket one welded up

I don't think its illegal here. I scrap cars out on the side and the cat and radiator are the first things that i cut off before bringing them in. Depending on the mood of the junkyard dog I can usually get around $35-$50 for a cat. Being that this one is a little different shape/length/quality/difficult to come by I figured it might be worth more.

Anybody interested in returning their car to stock??

I'm on the same boat. I replaced mine for emissions. I ended up driving down to south phoenix to scrap it, and the people looked at it and said it's too big to be stock and offered me $10. I told him a little more then to pound sand.
