I think have to sell and get a old Toyota or something. Could I even get $1500 for a 944 with a blown headgasket?

Maybe, depending on the condition of the rest of the car and other recent maintainance. $1500 for an otherwise good car + $1000 for a headgasket job (or ~$100 DIY) can = One cheap NA!

Don't give up on this one. Take it back. I seriously doubt you blew a head gasket. Who knows what this guy took off to get better engine access. i.e. the oil cooler.

good luck

It has new belts, new waterpump, new hoses, konis all around, newly rebuilt PS rack, new tie rods, new A-arms, new A-arm bushings, new wheel bearings etc.. mechanically I had it to damn near perfect condition until this occurred.

I was actually getting ready to move on and start working on the exhaust, cosmetic stuff (body needs some work) and the interior.. guess not.

The head gasket isn't the problem, most NA milkshakes are from oil cooler seals. See what the wrench says before you decide to sell it and get a beater.

The problem is I think it might be hard proving they screwed up, and it may have just been a bad cooincidence ..

I looked at the oil cooler assembly and it looked ok as far as I could tell without ripping anything out. However, the oil that's leaking looks clean (not mixed with coolant). Is there a more thorough way to check the oil cooler seal?

Another thing I've noticed.. since "the shop" has done my waterpump, the belts have been louder than usual. Not a "squeal", but the usual belt noise only louder. Wonder if the tension's off?

actually, if it was leaking lots from between the filter and the oil sender, isn't that where the oil cooler seals are? that would cause a milkshake, and then your head gasket could be fine...

If the oil cooler o-rings blew and pumped like 5-6 quarts of oil into the cooling system, it would overfill the cooling system causing it to bleed the extras out. Check the vent line at the reservior, if its' got oil residue, I'd say it's the cooler. The oil would go to the top and be blown out first when the system reached pressure. Good luck

Schlag,
I see you ordered the oil cooler gasket set. I had a similar problem, car was dumping alot of oil, qt in couple hundred miles, some oil in the coolant too. Did the oil cooler seal job, not hard at all but very messy. Make sure you have the tool for aligning the housing for the bypass valve too, cheap tool and worth wile. Well when I got my housing off the seals for the passages to the oil filter and pressure guage sender where as brittle as hard plastic, not nice pliable as O rings are supposed to be. Replaced all the parts and "Voilla" no more oil leaks. Good chance the either your mech had it apart/loose or just concidental failure. Be sure to get your brakes cleaned too. I ruined a set of pads with the oil on mine. Good luck and hope all turns out OK.

Hey Schlag,

What mechanic from South Jersey? I am just curious as I have also had a botched job from a well known SJ mechanic.
