Post Questions about 951's

I am exploring all angles here trying to make the right decision for me. Is the 951 any more to maintain than the 944? What are the pros and cons of the 951?

This, again? Jamie, there are already threads on this currently.

I would suggest you check out our faq here online about it, also www.clarks-garage.com

They are similar, but some of the parts are more expensive to replace than the 944, to handle the engine, such as suspension, and let's not forget the Turbo, itself. It also depends on how the previous owners have taken care of it.

Once you start modding, you can blow the headgasket rather easily.

It really boils down to how much money you want to spend, taking care of it, etc. Always leave aside $1500 a year or more, for repairs, etc.

Oklahoma also has some nasty weather out there (I used to live in Tulsa), so I would not suggest either the 944 or 951 to drive in the snow and ice - you'd regret it, after it did some eating on your body!

If you leave it stock, the repair bills should be similar. Boost is addictive so good luck keeping it stock.

Thanks, I have the funds to maintain a 944. I just didn't want to jump into a 951 and have to pay three or four grand a year just to drive the thing. Your probably right though. It will probably take all of one day to decide to turn up the boost and start modding it.

Devia: What's wrong with driving these cars in the ice/snow? I drive my cars year round, they're great!

I have A/S tires on the S2 for the ice/snow times, so that works well, but the thing that scares me the most is the other drivers (I hate OK drivers-no offense) that don't have a clue as how to drive in the snow.

As for the cost difference between the NA and the turbo. The turbo is a little bit more expensive to maintain, but it really depends on how the car was treated by the previous owners. I actually had to put a LOT more money into my S2 than into the turbo. All in all, the difference between a well maintained turbo and a well maintained NA Porsche will be pretty small.

Jamie,

I had an '87 S before my current 951. It was a maintenance nightmare. My 951 has been much more reliable of a car. Like everyone has said, just depends on how it's taken care of to begin with. Plus, the turbos are so much more fun to drive. Where in OK are you??

Slevy951, I am in Miami. It really looks like I just need to know the maintenance history to get a reliable car. I guess any abused p-car will be outlandish on repair and maintenance. Do you guys from Tulsa have any good roads for spirited driving? The closest I have found to you is outside of Pryor not sure of the highway found it by accident once. I also do alot of trips on the backroads to Branson Mo. Man those are some of the funnest roads I have ever driven on.

Slevy951, I didn't realize KLA industries was here in Oklahoma. I found that site a while back and put it on my favorites list. Good to see so many P-car lovers here. I just found out Broken Arrow has a business also. Man this is great!

OK seems to have a large Porsche community. My 951 was first adopted in Tulsa.
The boost is addictive. Although rather than modding to get more boost, I'd mod to get the boost sooner. There's a $90 part called a "944 Turbo Boost Enhancer", which will lower the turbo spool up RPM. And I'd get a better intake system (like the cone filters). Those are the first engine upgrades in my plan.
Just don't forget the suspension.

My 951 was sold brand new to a person in the military in Oklahoma. I will have to check the stamps and records to see what city and dealership but I want to say Tulsa or Normon.

you can get the lindsey boost enhancer from lindsey racing, also the reliaboost from boostsciences.com or from guru racing. There may be others, but those are the most popular. the reliaboost is only like $30.

Jamie, I'm 40 min. east of Joplin. If you're ever in the neighborhood, get in touch. I'm a 944/951 junky too plus I have a nice '86 turbo 4 sale! Jared 417-850-1863 jar_red@hotmail.com
