Look on clark's garage web site. There are instructions for this. You will have to remove the nose header panel. Unfortunately on 944s earlier than 85 1/2, the panel has spot welds the you will have to break lose to take it off.

Not sure on the spot welds. I did it on my 944 without the welds. Wasn't too bad. The bolts on the outer edge were kind of hard to get to. Make sure you have a 1/4" drive socket set with extension. Takes about 1 hour for everything.

yeah clarks garage says to drill them out so i think from there i can use some new fasteners to put the nose piece back on for easy removal if i need to again, its extra work but worth it if i need to remove it again. no use in re-welding it for now.

Did this on my 80 931 without removing the panel, but it had the vents that I removed. I can't see it even being possible to do it without removing the panel on a early 944.

You don't need to remove the panel. I did it on my '84 by pulling off the old one and carefully using a tool to press the nuts on. IIRC, I had a boxend that held the nut and I ziptied it to a screwdriver so that it would be long enough to reach. Took a while but it worked.

Hi GTSilver, The Mother of invention, Where there is a will there is a way, etc.. I like your method the best of all. I used that black weather sealer on a long common screw driver. Super sticky stuff that held the little push on nuts.

Cheers,
Larry

You don't need nuts on the back... just get the style that pushes in. No need to get underneath the header panel at all.

GTSilver944 how did you access the back of the panel i cant seem to find a place to reach up with a tool to push the grommets onto the back of the emblem?

it would awesome if i didn't have to remove the panel, drilling the body work isn't one of my favorite things lol

It's been 3 or 4 years but... pull the front bumper (2 19mm bolts and disconnect the turn signal wire connection) and look under there for a few large ovals. I think I had more luck going from there (the front/bottom of the nose pannel) than the back/top holes.

Mine was the same thing. The boxend just held the grommet so that it could be pressed on. Might try putting a dab of grease on the grommet so that it sticks to the boxend and won't accidentally fall off during installation.

okay ill have a look tonight, the kit i got uses grommet not bolts, can the same concept of your tool design be used? im not sure how to go about pressing the grommets onto the back of the emblem that sticks through the panel without having access with my hands

If you have the little black plastic things, you can push them into the top of the panel and press in the emblem. Would be hard to not dent the header panel without removing it though. If you use the spring clips, then you go fasten them from the bottom side. The spring clips look kind of like the pinch things that go on the back of a pin that you wear on cloths.

I had not trouble just pushing it on without denting the header panel at all
