You might. If you're thinking about putting a supercharger on it to counterract the sluggishness of the auto, you might just want to hold off until something else turns up.

Drive it. See if it kills you or if we're all just a bunch of crabby purists.

in short, absolutely not, I would not drive an auto 944.

If you enjoy the control of a stick (as many of us do), more than you hate having to push the clutch in and out as you inch along in traffic (as all of us do), get a stick.
I wouldn't think the handling would be much different on an AT, so they'll both corner the same, it'll just take the AT a bit longer to get up to speed.
But since autoX is a consideration, I'd have to say the ease of driving benefits of an AT will not outweigh the manual's gear selection benefit on the skidpad.
