Post Skip... Tech Session on MSD install?

Skip (or anyone),

I took the MSD plunged today at the parts store. They stock MSD stuff now. Well, I can only afford the coil for now, and I'm wondering if anyone has any install info for it. I searched and found Skip's post, but unfortunately he doesn't have a tech-session for it. (Skip, you're slacking - jk buddy).

Anyway, begin stupid question: where is the factory coil? End stupid question.

I think its over by the window washer fluid and the power steering, I remember something that looks like the coil that was getting in my way when I was changing my PS lines.

I'm not exactly sure, but i'm sure someone here will tell you soon.

So I just replace the stock one with this MSD one? That seems easy enough (or....too easy....?)

Thanks again!

I've got no idea about installing a new one, just knew where it was at.

Uh, not sure what threw you off... maybe the name: MSD Ignition and Coil Installation

And for my next trick...

Working on a new tech-session for the Weltmeister control arm bushings right now - should be up in an hour or so. Check the Tech Index

Just realized why you may not have found the article - I stopped updating the model specific stuff in the left nav bar a while ago - site is under redesign (aren't they all ) Look in the Tech and Info indexes if looking for a complete and accurate listing.

And, no, you shouldn't need the ballast resistor - AFAIK, that statement is a CYA measure they take so hot rodders with direct charge systems don't cry refund when they melt the dizzy.

Good Luck!

The MSD coil is a little smaller in diameter than the stock coil,so you have to build up a little bit of foam or whatever so when you tighten down the factory hold down clamp it will grip the new coil.Other than that it is just 2 wires.

Skip,

THANKS! Last night I got it installed OK. You are right, I didn't see that TechSession because I looked under 944 > Engine Electrical and didn't see it.

Regarding the size of the coil. Something I worked out last night was I took half of the clip that holds the coil out (the one that can be removed) and drilled to holes on the opposite side from where the screw goes. In front of the slot where the metal tab goes in (makes sense?) I cut that tab off, and essentially shortened the clip by about a half inch, put it in and it holds the coil nice and snug.

Thanks for the info about the resistor!

Much appreciated,
Matt
