Unhappy I think I broke my speedometer!

Today I decided it was time to take apart my gauges and fix my odometer. After finally fixing it, and trying to get the numbers to line up for 2 hours, I got it all back together. Unfortunatly, in the process my speedometer needle had fallen off, so I was going to have recalibrate it.

I grabbed my drill and got ready to get work. I stuck it in the back of the gauge, and pulled the trigger. Well, the odometer was racking up miles, but the needle wasn't moving. I pulled the gauge back apart, and found a twisted piece of metal under the speedometer needle. It looks like it may have been a spring at one point, but it sure isn't any more. So know I'm stuck.

I have no idea how a speedometer actually works, so I also have no idea what to do. It's pretty obvious that I broke something, but I don't know if I can fix it in anyway. Please help!

Oh, and just in case, how much does a new/ used gauge cost?

i'm sure you could find one rather cheaply, i have a few used guage clusters, i'm sure i could part one out for ya. and you could take it apart, (carefully!!!) and make your mileage match. how's $50 sound for the odo/speedo sound?

let me know if you need it, email ERAU944@hotmail.com

good luck!
Mike

I'm considering your offer, and I have another question:

There's currently a 924 gauge set on ebay. Would this work in my car (83 944)? I could always just swap the paper-like faces to get the 944 look for the gauge, and have an extra tach and warning light cluster. I just don't know if all the connections are the same.

as far as i know,
the 924S guages are the same (just white and black with orange needles) and the turbos are too (green and black with orange needles, with the exception of the tach which has boost)

i have been looking for a set of good used 924S guages for a long time (i dont have money though, i'd just like the faces really) i think the guages will work just the same as far as speedo goes (if it goes to 160)

good luck, and let me know
Mike
