Post TEC III

This is for anyone who is running a TEC III engine management. What was your total $$, installed and is the system worth the money? What glitches, if any, have you had and how did you solve them? Who has the best prices and support?

My sytem installed, by myslef, was about $2500. I made my own adaptors for items like the crank sensor and machined the trigger wheel. This was all in a track only car.

Issues on install.
1) Fired up the first try on a TOTAL engine rebuild + Tec3. Thank you very much Chris White of 944enhancement.com for all of your help. Phone, email and phone support at the dyno

2) Spent about 3 hours on the dyno dialing in the car. Started with about 270 rwhp and left with about 370 rwhp. Not bad! Could do the second one in less than 2 hours.

Glitches: Since I had one of the early units Electromotive offered to send me an update at no cost. Unfortunately that update didn't work out too well. Electromotive immediately overnighted a replacement and offered to come to VIR to solve any issues. There were none, but how's that for service That was typical of my dealings with the Electromotive staff. Always helpful even when I asked the same question twice.

The problematic replacement unit was due to poor solder joints from a vendor which Electromotive no longer uses.

To date absolutely no additional problems.

Best place to buy from? My vote would go to Chris. Timely support is very important to me. I don't have a lot of time to waste. Chris was very quick to help.

Best price? I would think Chris would be right in there with pricing. He has also worked on a plug and play system for the 951. It should save the non do it yourselfer a lot of agony.

Worth the money? Absolutely! I have fuel and ignition maps for 93 octane, 100 octane and 110 octane. If I can't get the gas I want or am feeling frugal on a 3 day weekend I can dial in what I want in about 1 minute. That's about how long it takes to load a new program.

I want to do some head work this winter and I can make corrections for that and any other mod.

One big item, I got rid of all of that 'old' wiring and engine management equipment. There were only 3 of the original wires left in my car. Two brake light wires and 1 low fuel level sender wire. My total wiring system is now less than 6 months old. Again, track only car.

I'm a happy camper. I'd do it again. I'll be helping a friend set his system up on the dyno in the next 2 weeks.

Other items to check: Danno is working on a Link system which may warrant a close look. No Link support when I did my car.

Please explain further about the Link System. Or maybe we should ask Danno?

Thanks Alan,,I had seen some of your previous post so I figured you might chime in. Great to hear it's doing well. What turbo(trim, CFM)and boost are you running with regards to the octane maps; are you leaving the boost alone and letting the maps take car of it for you? I've emailed Chris,,,I've been saving the money from the boost control(LOL!) but I just want to make sure. I want to get rid of the DME and KlR and renew the wiring underneath. I'm headed to the dyno on Thursday with my car.

I had TEC2 on a setup in my Jetta. It's made roughly 600 to the wheels, but that depended on the turbo setup. Electromotive is a GREAT company. Nothing but compliments to them. When they came out with TEC 3, since I purchased a TEC 2, they sent me about ten catalogs(I think their computer messed up .. I got two a day for a week). If I make a project out of my 83, rest assured TEC 3 will go in

I'm not sure what the Tec3 would do for a supercharged application. Might want to check with Tim Richards.

The turbo is a Turbonetics item. I got it from Scott Gomes, not sure about the wheels inside.

Other than the turbo the car has 83 lb. injectors, a lightened crank and an upgraded fuel pump. That's about it.

I have pushed 22 psi in 98 degree weather at VIR on 100 octane fuel all day for 3 days. Never a problem. If I dial it down to 18 psi I'm still making 300 and doing it with pump gas. I have even used 20 psi at Putnam Park on pump gas. No problem just add a little extra fuel and adjust the advance.

Another nice item is that I don't you could foul a plug with the Tec3. If you pull the two leads off the coil pack it looks like a Frankenstein flick when you crank the engine.

You're gonna come here to install it, right?? BTW, we were talking about a dyno day. Just need to find boxes for all the chips. Thinking about doing comparison runs with my car since it's the closest to stock.

Just back from a friends house who has a Tec3 installed in his car. He had just installed a set of 82 lb. injectors, up from 55, and needed a little help.

It took a little over 30 minutes to play with the fuel and advance to get him back up and running. I loaded one of my programs since his car is similar. Although he does have the Kokeln turbo. It will be interesting when we get it to the dyno.

Just another nice feature of the Tec3. You can trade programs.

Please save the above listed "file" for future use in a car equipped with the Kokeln turbo. A "your choice" of your favorite brewski shall be delivered to your door..............

Consider it saved. Should be at the dyno next week if they have a slot open.

My wife finds it helpful to nag so you might want to send me a note next Friday (10/4)

Anyone out there used a Haltech, can compare? I'm looking at both for future EFI conversion on my future GT4 931. Was leaning towards the Haltech as a friend at works has had very good experience with it; OTOH, I don't believe it can incorporate a knock sensor, which is a huge plus for me to the TEC-III.

924RACR,

If you have somone close by who knows and uses the Haltech don't write it off completely. Support is a big part of the game. It's worth looking into and you'll learn a bit more about stand alone systems.

I have the knock sensor on my car with the Tec3 but I don't allow it to do anything. I just use it as a ref. After you tune the car and obtain a good A/F and ignition map you don't need to wory about it unless you like to play with the boost.

Even then you can have multiple maps. I load what I know will be the highest boost and run. That ususally means a 22 psi map
