The best part is people still drive them at vintage races so you can still see a beast like this run.

Thanks for the post about one of the most incredible racing cars ever built.

The owner of the car in this picture had it out at the PCA christmas event for the triad in greenboro, that and another 917 were there. It wasn't moving but in the show room it looked amazing.

I saw one of those racing in some historic races in Montreal during the F1 weekend this year. Needless to say, it won. You might be surprised though that it was still VERY slow compared to F1 car laptimes. In fact, it's laptimes were about the same as the Ferrari 360 Modena Challenge car laptimes. I guess brake and suspension technology has come a long way in the last 20 years!

Well suspension and brake technology and aero work has come a long way. But you also have to take into account that the driver of the 917/30 was probably not driving 10/10 ths. The guys in the ferrari challenge push really hard.

If you were driving a 1000 hp million dollar car would you take it to the limits?

I saw that race in Montreal, the Can Am were slow because the track was wet and they were running on slicks!! Otherwise I think they would have killed the F360's...

That IS incredible- of course, there's always something faster. I remember reading about the fastest Grand National- Kenny Dutwieler's- he ran the 1/4 in just under 7 @ 197 or so. His 0-60 was .9- can't remember what the 0-100 was, but could look it up. Joey Amato's world record dragster is 4.54@324 or so- he hits 100 in just under a single second- that is just UNFU**INGREAL! BTW- under acceleration, a full G is 22 miles per second- think about it... That means that the 917 is still accelerating at over a G up to over 100mph- DAMN!!!
