Post grinding noise

had a guy call me that owns a 91 944 s2. Said he hit a pothole now he has a grinding noise when he's 3k rpm and up(under load). With the car sitting still he can rev it and it's ok. Any ideas? I'm going to go check it out later today.

update: It a loud vibrationing noise. It you rev it up with the clutch pushed in it wont do it. Drive it or rev it with the clutch out and around 3k you hear a loud vibrating noise that doesn't stop till you push the clutch in. I mean it's LOUD. Could it be a throwout bearing? Any ideas?

Motor mount? Tell him to check those. My guess is the engine is sitting on the chasis.

I'll check it and see but the noise is loud (noise like a vibration, not just a vibration) and it seems to be coming from around the bellhousing. Like I said, with the clutch pushed in you don't hear it. Would a bearing in the torque tube do this?

Mark,

I would check if one of the motor mount is broken. If yes, it is possible that the engine has disaligned from the transmission during the impact, and something has suffered. I suppose you have to check the following parts, with decreasing order of probability for damages:

1) The motor mounts
2) The pilot bearing (where central shaft goes)
3) The central shaft (small shaft inside the clutch housing)
4) The TO bearing
5) The torque tube and associated bearings
6) Check the balancing of flywheel and pressure plate

Hope you solve with 1-2 or 1-4 at most.

Good luck

Ugo

Redcar,

the best thing to do is to lift the car on a shop lifter, leaving the rear wheels free moving.

Then have one people in the car, 1th or 2th gear engaged, with throttle moving back and forth in the 3000-4000 RPM, were noise is max.

A second people below the car can listen to any strange noise. If you listen a "bearing noise" coming from the clutch area, the first candidates are the pilot bearing and the TO bearing.

Let us now what you find.

My guess is torque tube, same exact thing in my car. Clutch and rev, no vibration. No clutch and rev to 3K, grinding. mines been doing it for a while. it gets better after a while, but it will be replaced soon. I just havent found the time.
