Default Wheel Spacer Question

I checked the archives and couldn't really find a direct answer to this; I have a 1986 944 Turbo with the 7&8 x 16" Fuchs. I would like to fill-out the rear wheel wells out a bit better. I'm looking at either 21mm or 28mm H&R spacers that bolt on and have separate wheel studs pressed in. Questions:

1) Has anyone out there tried this? Likes/dislikes?
2) Is one a better fit than another? I really don't want rubbing issues at all.
3) Are there any downsides to using the spacers such as handling, wear issues,
abnormally high unsprung weight, etc?
4) Anything else I missed?

Thanks!

The fronts are sensitive to offset, but the accepted wisdom is that the rears are free. The only downside is accelerated bearing wear.
