Question Engine seems to lag - 944 NA

Evenin' all...

My '86 NA seems to lag when leaving from a stop. It feels like it wants to be revved pretty high... I didn't think these were necessarily high-revvers like say, my 16-valve Civic Si.

The K&N air filter is in pretty good shape, so I think it's breathing fine. I think it's been a while for the fuel filter, so I'll be replacing that for sure.

Anything else suggested? What about fuel additives/injector cleaners?

Thanks!

Goody

Vacuum leak? Try spraying starter fluid in and around the intake when idling.

Sorry, newsgroup no-no ... forgot one thing. Car idles fine.

Still do the starter fluid trick? If so, what am I hoping to find out?

Mine seems on the low end, NOT the upper end. Could still be vaccuum-related. So how does a person begin to tackle that? Simple look at hoses?

It does. You complaining?

She likes to be revved high. Hell I feel like I could run at 55oo all day long.

Welcome to the world of the 944. Live with it.

Hey, heres a newbie question, I normally shift at 3k for normal driving, 4.5k if I'm playing. What's the max shift speed without ragging the engine?

Porsche says not to shift below 2k.

As to max. Check the redline. But if your smart you'll keep to shifting about 4.5k, not for ragging but for speed.

You spray the strater fluid around the manifold-to-head gasket area and in the general vacuum components and see if the engine revs up. The idea being, if there are vacuum leaks, the engine is pulling in air AFTER the AFM and in the presence of "fuel" comming ito the picture (via starting fluid) it increases RPM.

One can tune a steady and consistant idle even with a vacuum leak, but it will bog under low RPM accelleration. Vacuum leaks should show themselves at lower RPMs like what you described. It is just a simple check.

Yes, check hoses visually and any part of the intake track, tighten band clamps - the starting fluid is just a help to possibly locate a leak.

It could be clogged or leaking injecters too. Rule out the vacuum leak scenreo and get back to us.

Any other signs? Black smoke out the back?

3 things I do when my performance gets dull, as it does from time to time.

1. Add a gallon of tolulene to your next fill up. It will spice up a tank of gas, and its pretty cheap thrills. the merits of tolulene are well-documented on this forum. The highly esteemed Danno has a great document on his RacerX site that details all kinds of ways to tweak your fuel on the cheap, and get a better bang out of your FREAKING $2.27 HOLY CRAP GAS IS EXPENSIVE fuels.

2. New plugs. No Platinims or fancy prong thingys, just good quality copper cores. We are, after all, putting them in cars designed to race hard around real race tracks. Not boulevard pimps, despite the best efforts of a few misguided owners. I do hear that the Iridium plugs are pretty sweet and hold a good gap well, but tooooo much money. Another low budget tweak, carefully gapped of course. (Buy a tool, again, cheap.)

3. 60 weight Castrol high performance engine oil on the next change. It has worked wonders on every car I have owned that had more than 75,000 miles. It seems to seal up the rings a little tighter. And since 944/951 engines tend to run a bit hot, being partially oil cooled, the thicker oil seems to work well. Again, since its around $2 a quart, another miserly tweak.

YMMV.

I don't mind the high revving at all - just figured with a larger engine (2.5 vs 1.6 in the Honda) that there'd be a different character on launch.

Just need a different muffler if it's normal!

Thanx Matt and Water - will check those out. I think they had Platinums in when I bought it, will check it out. Also need that fuel filter as well.
