Question 968 "auto-tensioner" retrofit to an S2????

As I get set to do belts, rollers, pump on my '90 S2 I got to thinking...

Is it possible (Has anyone done this?) to retrofit the 968's hydraulic tensioner onto an S2 in place of the spring tensioner? I know that the 968 engine is based on the 3.0 of the S2 and I'm pretty sure that they both share the same timing belt part number. Was the tensioner just added-on to the existing 3L block mounting points? Where does it get its oil feed? Would it require the 968 timing belt cover?

Just thinking...

While I am not sure about a retrofit to a 90, I know that on my 86 there is a boss that is not part of the casting, thus no place to mount the tensioner. You could look up the block part numbers from the dealer if the block part #'s are the same then you should be able to do it. HTH

Thanks Kevin.

Does your '86 have the eccentric roller adjusters? I know that in the later ones they switched to a spring tensioner and from the few pics that I've seen, it looks like they mounted the 968's hydraulic one in the same place. I'm not sure how though, or whether the location is identical.

Your idea on the part #'s is good though. Know of any dealers who are good about questions like this? The ones I deal with seem like It's a PITA to them when I order parts... "Oh, that's an old one... We don't stock stuff for cars that old. I'll have to special order... That's gonna have to be shipped in...", said like it's a whole lot of work for them. I get the feeling that they wouldn't be too receptive to just asking questions...
