Default Need help selecting new wheels for my 944

I am anew member and I have many questions where I could use some help. I have purchased a 944 but it the driver rear tire is rubbing badly against the fender. The wheels are aftermarket but I do not know much about them. The tires are 255 17 so I think that is why they are rubbing. I looked at some boxter wheels today but I do not know if they will fit. They have a 40 offset inthe rear and a 55 offset in the front. I do not know the offset for my 1986 944. Does anyone know what offset wheels can I use? What is the best combination of offset and tire width I can use to avoid tire rubbing the fender?
The boxter wheels I am looking at are 17 with a 55 offset in the front with a 205 tire and a 17 with a 40 offset in the rear will this work?

'86 is a 23 offset, 255 on 17" wheels might very well rub. Finding rims to fit that year is hard, unless you use spacers of some kind. I have "86 turbo phonedials (16") on mine 255-50-16 rear tires, 245-50-16 front.
Car has been lowered an inch all the way around, no rubbing in rear, fronts just barely rubs on really hard driving in turns

If you are running 17"s on an 86, chances are high that you might already have spacers bolted on to your car. There are very (and I mean VERY) few 17 and 18 inch wheel choices that bolt right on to early offset 944 (23 as stated above). Do you have a picture of these wheels? Check for spacers between your wheel and hub, you should be able to see them without removing the wheel.

The boxster wheels you are looking at will fit if you use at least a 1.5 inch spacer front and rear. I am using a 1.5" front and 2" rear spacer on my car, but with narrower tires in the rear.

Thanks for your information. I am new to Porsche and to be a weekend mechanic so my skills are very very very limited. But I am learning a lot on the internet and through te forum.

I will take the wheels off this week to take measurements and pictures. I am sure there are spacers on the front (about 1 to 1.5 inches) but on the rear it does not look like there are any spacers. Still it looks like there is a lot of room between the current tire location and the inner wheel well wall.

Where can I get good affordable spacers?

Glad we could help!

Hmm, pictures and measurements will definitely help determine what's going on there. A 255 tire *should* normally be ok, but it depends a lot on the sidewall height and offset of the wheel. Does it only rub going over bumps or cornering or both?

Where are you from? I have had good luck finding spacers for sale from local Porsche club members. Otherwise you could buy some from H&R or probably Ebay.

I am running 18x10 (et65) with 285/18/40's rear no rubbing at all.

Are you rubbing inside or outside?

We really need a wheel fitment thread on this forum. It seems like every day someone is asking about which wheels fit their car.

OP- Welcome! Fill out your location in your profile and try to post some pictures of your car!

That rubs with a 255 on it? How low is your car? You shouldn't be having problems with that wheel/tire combination.

I have no idea about the car hight I got it only 3 weeks ago.
From what the damage look like I only been 1/2 inch more clearance to the fender so the new wheels I am looking at are 8 x17 ET40 I think I can pull the tire in what do you think?

Make better sentences dude. I can barely decipher what you are trying to ask.

But the new wheel you want to use will work fine.

Whoa, for all we know English may not be his native language, and kudos for him to be a Member from the get-go. I've seen people with hundreds of posts who don't pony up for a membership.

Given that it is only rubbing on one side, I would check to make sure that your rear shock absorber and spring are in good condition. I had a similar issue which appeared under acceleration or when the car was heavily loaded. It turned out to be a bad shock absorber.

I would be careful with the et 40 wheels they will look a bit odd on the car as they will be quite recessed into the wheel well (17mm more that stock wheels)

^^^^^^^^^^^^^Agree 100%.

This sounds more suspension related than wheel combo. If that is the case, it won't change with different wheels
