Default How's 951's 10 speakers system?

I recently purchased 1988 951 with 10 speakers system, but it's missing head unit.
So, I am thinking to get cd receiver for them, but have few questions.

1. how are they? compare to modern car stereo system?

2. does nakamichi cd400 work with stock speakers?

Thanks guys!

They are heavy and it's hard to keep the speaker boxes from falling apart. The stock ITT or Nokia speakers are OK (I think that's what's in there) are OK but old at this point and often the surrounds are dying.

It's nice having the upper speaker location for a better front stage but the under door boxes are a pain. I;d suggest getting some non 10-speaker door cards and doing something else, store the 10-speaker door cards for resale.

You can use a different head unit with the 10-speaker setup if you like, with or without the EQ.

I actually put the 10 speaker setup in my NA and replaced all the components... and it sounds great.

They SUCK... I have the stock 10 speaker in my Turbo S. Head unit is Kenwood from the 90's I guess. The sound quality sucks and you lose arm rest space. I would rather not have it at all. However it was what the car came with so in the interest of preservation I keep it. I have no desire to find a stock headunit as I consier the Kenwood "Period correct" I have owned this car for 13 years and so all mods completed in the first 5-6 post sale I consider to be "period" mods. Really my 3 mods are 1) head unit. 2) stupid "turbo" reflector 3) Polished wheels. I coinsider all 3 "period" mods.

Hi,

The ten speaker stereo is a reasonable basis for a high quality stereo, but it does need some help. I've been into home and car audio for a long time as a hobby. I'm getting excellent sound now, but the only thing that is stock is the door speakers. I've given an overview of what I've done below. I can provide model numbers and the like if this sounds interesting.

I have
A "period correct" single CD head unit
Three separate power amps.
A subwoofer behind the rear passenger wheel
I replaced the 6.5 inch speakers in the rear with some new woofers
One amp drives the stock front speakers in both doors
One amp drives the 6.5 inch woofers in the rear
One amp drives the sub

The amps all have electronic crossovers in them.
The front is set to high pass around 100Hz
The rear is set to low pass around 250 Hz
The sub is set to low pass around 125 Hz

It is not audiophile class sound - for that I think you'd need new tweeters. But, I do like keeping the factory look and thought this would be one way to go for it. I'm very pleased. The sound is clean and smooth across the entire spectrum and has plenty of bass for all but the most devoted hip hop devotee.

Good Luck,

Phil
