low oil pressure and no oil level check light?

i noticed my oil pressure was below zero on the gauge and doesn't move when revving or driving the car. when i turn the key with the engine off the gauge goes to the same spot just before zero and stays there no matter what.
no physical noises from engine and coolant temp is same as always.
i plan to have my oil pressure checked by a shop just for safety's sake but does it sound like the sender unit/gauge is at fault or problems internally?

Do NOT drive the car until you know you have a gauge issue. You can have plenty of oil and zero oil pressure due to a problem in the pickup tube or pump. If the oil pressure is truly zero, the engine can be fried in 2 miles.
Does anyone know a way to determine oil pressure when the gauge can't be trusted?

can't think of nothing that wouldn't require some custom fittings and gauges whatnots.
harborfreight has a oil pressure tester kit, but none of the supplied fittings would be big enough to go into the oem spot where the sender is, so u'll have to also shop sears/ace for another fitting adapter.

Your dash guages could have bad connections or grounds. You may want to clean them up. It is easy on the early cars. There is a big ground post above the relays under the dash.
Buy a oil pressure sending unit. A local auto parts store may be $40-$60, eBay $30 & up.
You could check the wires on the oil pressure sender. They go over the water pump and you may have fried the insullation or cut the wires. Be very careful of the oil pressure sender switch. The posts are hollow and will snap easy.
A new crush washer will stop new drips.

ive talked to three different shops now and they all say it sounds like the oil pressure sending unit/wiring/gauge is at fault and the PCA Tech guys told me its probably that as well
im going to get an oil pressure tester this weekend. does anyone know what size the fitting/adaptor is for the tester?
