Default Diagnostic help

Hello,

I have a Porsche 968 which has an AIR BAG light on. I wanted a way to read and clear codes so i did some research. After that i went on Ebay and purchased a couple of items.

Porsche 19 pin OBD to OBD2 Diagnostic Adapter Lead Cable and
Piwis Cable

I just got everything in and now its not working. These were purchased separately. The Piwis cable came with Durametric's software v. 3.0. Every time i try to connect to my car's DME the software says that it doesn't recognize the cable. I spoke to Durametric rep. and he said that their cables have a firmware that tells the software that it's authentic.(go figgure) Now i'm wondering is there a generic type of software that doesn't need that?

Yea, something is goofy with your cable for sure. The current version of durametric is over 5.0 with a 6.0 beta. Also, the standard cables lock out after it is used on 3 different cars. The professional version is good for unlimited cars. I do not know of any generic software that will work, short of buying a knock off PIWIS for 3k.

The items that i bought were bought not fom Durametric.com but from Ebay international. One mayor difference that i saw in the design of the OBD1(19 pin) to OBD2(16 pin) cable, compared to the Durametric one, was that there was no tread on peice of plastic that threads to the DME port. The software acts as if it isn't plugged in. Is there a sensor/switch on the port that engages communication once the peice is threaded on?

here are the cables i'm using.

Yea, the durametrics has a separate round connector for the 19pin OBD cars, so I doubt you can just convert it using that adapter if it doesn't have the firmware. I am curious though why they would sell you a PIWIS kit with durametrics 3.0 That has to be some OLD software.

Here is my dura. prof kit.

On your 19 pin connector side is there a thread-on hook?

i'll check when I get home.

Stupid question on procedure:
1. Ignition is on, but not running
2. Plug in both ends of the cable, to car and computer,
3. Start durametrics program

Has to be done in that order. (well maybe 1&2 can be switched, but it has to be plugged in before firing up the application)
