Phone Dials Need Luvin'
I'm getting around to reconditioning my phone dial wheels and was curious as to which products would be the best to get them looking good. Obviously I'm not expecting them to be in showroom condition, but at least as close as possible. The condition now isn't too bad but is typical for a 15 yr. old 951. Are there any tips you guys have for the best cleaning such as types of material to scrub the wheels with or cleaning solutions that work best. Thanks for the help.

After doing a search awhile back there's a lot of previous posts for reconditioning phone dials. I'm trying to decide if I want to repaint mine or polish. There's a bunch of posts on both topics. I would definitely recommend doing your research first because some people had to start over from their mistakes!

You can have 15" wheels powdercoated for about $55 a wheel, about $65 for 16"
Which is completely the way to go. You dont have to do any work, they dip em, blast em & coat em!

i got mine repainted at a shop locally, painted and clearcoated (so i can wax and wash) and i cost $100 for the set, they look really good now.
sorry bout the poor picture quality
i did the center caps with mazda black metallic touch up paint and used acetone to wipe off the excess, they came out great!
enjoy

I just cleaned mine with varsol and filed and sanded the gouges on the lip. Remove the balance weights, but make a note of the location and weight so you can easily replace them after. I didn't have any acetone to remove the weight adhesive, but gum-off worked.

I just did this project. I pulled all four centercaps. I cleaned them with contact cleaner using an old tooth brush while spraying to get out all the gunk and grime, till it ran clean. Paints, I bought testors model paints Gold, black, and dark red. A very thin brush. I repainted the crests to match the hood badge.. let them all dry for a day.. well like 3 days. I pulled one wheel at a time, was at work I used a red 3M pad to ruff down the original paint on the wheel. Lots of small work here. Any nicks I sanded with 600 grit till smooth. I then cleaned the entire surface with fast evaporating contact cleaner... no residue. Taping off the tire was the hardest thing. getting the tape to stick. I cleaned the tire edge with 409 surface cleaner.. it took some scrubbing. till it looked dull. then the tape stuck.. The only tape I could get to work well was electrical tape.. I carefully placed 2-3 inch strips tucking them under the rim to complete the circle. then used news paper and clear packing tape to block off the tire from the rim. I rewiped the rim with a clean dry rag. Then using rustoleum silver metalic paint, I lightly coated the inner diameter first to not get runs, then cross coated the inner rim. and did this 2 times. then did the outer side of the outside of the rim near the tire. two times around. waited 4-6 minutes and repeated the entire paint over again. ran hand over all the surfaces. after a 1/2 hour of drying time. if smooth it was all right. if it felt rough at all. that surface needed more paint. light coats, always so there are no runs. after 2 hours of total dry time I applied the clear coat rustoleum clear coat same as above. one good coat then wait 5 minutes then another coat. after 1/2 an hour feel around the rim. if you feel rough spot shoot that spot again lightly... Most important. even if you need to re shoot the clear. remove all the tape imediately. after the clear reshoot. The paint is still soft and will not peel off of the rim. I also at this point shot the caps with the clear. have to be carefull though. as the clear wanted to bleed off the colors of the cap. light coat. Installed waited a week. washed car and rims.. Will wait 3 more months before I wax the rims. HTH

Re: masking, I followed shaun's idea of deflating the tire so you can easily stick newspaper in between. Places where the paper was in contact with the rim, I separated them with nails, so I wouldn't have to remove the mask after each coat.
