Default autothority chips... for early n/a 944???

Hi all,
I was going through my old receipts and I noticed that the previous owner had purchased a an autothority chip -My understanding was that you couldn't chip the old 944. Is there a chip out there????

I think you can still use the chip in an early car if you clip the pins and solder the new chip in place. Not 100% certain on that though.

you can chip older cars. It does take a bit of work. Howver the PO could have bought the chip then realized it was not a drop in replacement and sold it off.

Putting a chip in a 944 is barely worth the money and effort when it easy. I would not even waste time thinking about it for an early car.

You had to send the DME into Autothority to have them do it (back in the day). I can personally vouch that it wasn't worth the $$...

What sort of gains would there have been with the chip?
Improvement in torque/HP? I have a usdm porsche 944, I am wondering where the difference in power between ROW and USDM 944s comes from.

The ROW have a higher compression. The U.S model has a 9.5:1 ratio and I believe the ROW are 10.5:1.

I think they claimed something like 15 h.p. I had to use 93 octane and even then still had some pre-ignition (no knock sensor on early cars) which caused an early head gasket failure I'm sure. Unless it's for a track car, make sure you can switch back to stock programming later...

I think the MaxHP chip is the best NA 944 chip you can buy, and IIRC it gets about 6 more HP at the wheels.

An NA chip isn't as much for power, as it is over all driveability.

Most chips are 2-3 hp.

The euro cars were rated a 163 vs 143 US. That came from flat top 10.6istons and no cat.

However when you dig into the numbers you realize that the 20 hp gap is really only 10 hp due to ratings changes between Euro DIN standards and SAE at the the time. The only way to really understand is to look at the factory kW ratings for power. I did this once and the realy gap was like 10hp. That 10 hp is about right for pulling cat on US 944.
