Default 944-1 wheel bearing question

hello i just replaced the rear wheel bearing on my 1983 944. the question i have is can you overtighten the rear axel nut i know it should be tightened to 350ftlbs. i just tightned it and there seems to be a bit of drag, ois this normal?
i should add i havent attached the cv shaft or the brake rotor.
thanks in advance

The 83 rear axle nut should be Torqued to 258 ft. lbs., plus 50 ft. lbs.. The extra 50 ft. lbs. is just to line up the cotter pin hole in the axle with the castle nut opening. You can always go over, but not back to align the holes. The 85.5 up 944's rear axle nut is a self locking nut, for a one time use, and it is Torqued to 365 ft. lbs.. This is all laid out in the Work Shop Manual.

Cheers,
Larry

Did you inspect the axle bearing surface real good? The hub is not going to spin like a top, but should turn freely. I hope you didn't Torque the nut to 350 lbs and then try to turn as that would apply too much load on the bearings. I use a bearing installer kit from Harbor Freight that works great and the bearings go in level as I tap them in. I don't like to second guess. It doesn't cost that much and makes work easier for me. I bought the bearing tool from Arnnworx for the rear wheel bearing on my 85.5, I also have an 83. My Son-in-law has an 85.5 and we both pool our tools. He is a great help as he is also a Porsche Mechanic. I taught Depot Level Aircraft Maintenance for years on the C-130, C-5, and F-15's and one thing I always stressed was to do the job right the first time and with the right tools.
