Question Thoughts on driving cross-country

If my 88 944s does not sell, to keep shipping costs down, I was thinking of shipping the car to California for $863 and having my other half drive it across country to Upstate NY. My other half is in San Diego at the moment - he suggested he put it up for sale there and if it does not sell, then he would drive it to NY. Has anyone completed such a journey in the past? Is this even a good idea? I investigated u-hauling it from CA to NY, and u-haul are saying that the 944 is too low to go on auto trailer - is this true? Any comments/suggestions/tips/hints would be appreciated.

I towed my 968 from atlanta to san francisco just fine with a uhaul auto trailer (they called it an auto transport). Usually, their customer service people have no idea what they are talking about.

If you have the time it is a fun trip, but long.

You might have to extend the ramps to get it on without the body work grounding out, but that's easy to do if you can find a couple of boards and some shims.

Chris, how long did it take you to complete the trip? and about how much did it cost? I am wondering whether this is a better idea than actually driving the car, as I would not want anything to happen to the car on the way there - thus leaving my other half stranded.

Scular, how long is long? piece of string I am not too savvy when it comes to miles, I am more of a Kilometres kind of girl.

Atl. to SF (~2700 miles) was 4 long days in a 24ft. truck pulling the trailer. Remember that the uhaul truck will have a speed limiter on it (set to 65mph if I remember correctly). I had my foot to the floor nearly the entire time. And the loaded truck will get about 6-7 mpg. I don't know how much I spent, but it wasn't cheap.

I just completed the reverse SF to Atl. trip in my 968 in 3 days (~36 hrs.). Much more enjoyable and relaxing trip in a car and you can open it up on the desert stretches. As for the cost, I guess it took about 100 gallons of fuel and 3 nights in hotels. About $400.

Get an AAA membership for your other half and drive the car. Don't uhaul it.

Get a AAA Gold membership(gold tows 100mi as apposed to 3mi) if you have any doubts about the cars reliability.

Thanks guys for your words of wisdom Sounds like driving the 944 was better overall for $$$ and man hours. Gold AAA membership seems the way to go too. Well, some doubts about its reliability only because since I have owned it, you can only drive it so many miles on this island before you start going in circles - don't know whether it knows how to drive in a straight line without seeing something you just passed only 1/2 hour before, or for that matter whether it will like not being able to see the ocean *if you catch my drift* <img src="graemlins/roflmao.gif" border="0" alt="[hiha]" />

Saratoga944 - I will be temporarily living in Elmira for about 6-9 months. Sorry I am not too familiar with NY state, as I am an Australian citizen. Is Elmira within driving distance of where you are? We are ultimately moving to Japan, however I am shipping my dog to Elmira to live with relatives first, get her settled in, perhaps attend college for a semester or two, then off to Japan. But if I like it there, I may stay.

Doug - no, unfortunately I am not with the Porsche Hawaii region, but I fully intended to join if I had been staying here longer.

No, Elmira is about a 4 hour trip from where I live. My wife went to Elmira college for a couple years though. Get ready for cold winters and high taxes!

yay.. Pamela is keeping her 944

good idea.. ship it.. drive it or haul it.. forget selling it for 5 grand! you're losing money (in my mind) either way at this point, might as well keep the car if you love it (which it sounds you do) . yay

I also live in upstate, NY. Glenville, to be exact. About 10, or so, miles away from Saratoga, the 944 hotbed. I bought my 944 from Dartmouth, MA. I towed it on a trailer without trouble, but of course Dartmouth is only a 4 hour drive. And i didnt rent the trailer. Good Luck Pamela!
