Post Removing balance shaft front oil seals (how to remove?)

I'm at a loss as to how i'm going to remove the oil seals on the balance shafts, it doesn't seem like those seals give worth a crap. Anyone have a way to get these out? I'm also trying to replace the crankshaft front oil seal. Thanks for the help.

okay... this is what you do if you have your engine out of your car: take the balance shaft housing bolts right off, pry off the housing off, pull out the shaft, and slide the seal off of the shaft. now, it would be a good idea to change those bearings.

if you engine is in the car, i'd say get right in there with a screwdriver and beat the things right off and you should be able to slide a new one right on.

and with the crankshaft... pry off the seal with a screw driver.

this is what i have done with my engine anyway

I used a flat blade screwdriver and stuck it into the old seal and levered it out, took about 10 seconds per seal. If you try to pry it out along the edge you'll probably damage the seal seat. Just stick it through the face of the seal and lever it out.

BTW when you replace the oil pump sleeve, lube the inside of the seal, and slide the sleeve into it first and replace as one piece, otherwise the inner lip of the seal will be "puckered out". Just slowly rotate the sleeve until you get the splines to line up, then use a seal driver or a LARGE (slightly smaller diameter than the outer ring of the seal) socket to seat the seal. If neither is available, use a small block of wood and lightly tap around the edge of the seal (a little at the time) with a hammer to seat the seal as evenly as possible.

Thanks for the replies, i guess I wasn't being agressive enough with the screwdriver. Bones: I see what your talking about with the oil pump sleeve, I spoke with Jay (Toolmaster) and he sugested a small screwdriver as well.

I recently had a problem with an oil seal on a crankshaft I devised this way of removing it get A small drill 3mm or so drill hole in seal try not to drill right through to avoid filings getting to other side (similar risk with driving in screwdrivers etc, then screw in self tapper as long or as short as you like then use pliers or claw hammer to pull out. It works a treat that is if you can get a drill in. Hope this helps, if not on this seal some other time perhaps.
