Well I just got back from the Autofest here on the west coast and I would say about eighty percent of the of the (several hundred) attendees were some version of the 911. I actually felt kind of cool having one of the "rare" 944's

I've seen it, and it's a fearful beast. Especially with his son at the wheel.

Hi J,
it's a real simple answer.Everybody knows that!
944's are not real Porsches
Even the engine is located in wrong place!
You are a senior and should know that

Actually - it's a great question - and I have a few minutes to share with you why you don't see many Porsches from the street on the opening page... Now - I'm not stating this to rip wide open another topic altogether (you'll understand what I mean as you keep reading), but rather some of the "challenges" I have on putting up pics on the opening page....
OK - as background, this site is pretty heavily used - it gets a LOT of visitors from a lot of various Porsche enthusiasts and owners. You can probably guess, for all that traffic - there are probably even some folks who visit and lurk on these Forums and my e-mail lists who may even work for the factory in various capacities, from both Germany and the US....
Now - keeping the size of Rennlist and the visitor demographics in mind, now add the fact that Porsche representatives are zealous in protecting their tradename/trademark. While many have discussed the use of the name "porsche" in a domain name, Porsche also makes claim to "the distinctive shape" and outline of their cars including, but not limited to the 911, 924, 944, 951, 993, etc... In short, if you have a site the size of Rennlist - chances are pretty good that if I put up a picture of a "street" Porsche on the main page - my phone would ring a few hours later with a legal representative calling to chat with me....
Now - surprise - I also happen to agree with Porsche's policies on these matters; in spite of some pretty aggressive comments by the detractors about "fair use", "public domain"; etc... In short - I spent a great deal of money and energy on this topic some years ago (remember - this site was called "Porschelist"), and we were the only site NOT threatened with litigation - but rather, Porsche Germany and I tried to work out an agreement that might be considered "fair" for both sides. At the end of several months, what we discovered that it was probably in both of our best interests to have me rename this site to something else (it became "Rennlist"). (BTW: you can do a WHOIS Search on my old domain PORSCHELIST.COM, as Porsche went out of their way to protect it & Rennlist from it being "scoffed up" by a 3rd party to try to pirate the good name PORSCHELIST had achieved and hijack the users - something which I truly appreciated)
Anyway - typically "race equipped" cars (like the TRG car and the other Porsche race cars on the front page) do not fall under the common interpretation "distinctive outline" or shape, as they have wings, fender skirts, splitters, etc. (but can be - depending on the actual photo, so be careful!) In other words, they don't have the same "shape" as the "production" cars given the wings, ground effects, etc... Also - a picture like the RUF Turbo on the page now, you'll notice - isn't a full picture, but rather a pretty terrific shot from the Goodyear site depicting the lower half of the car at speed....
So - my challenge is to come up with a terrific picture of a 944 that can be used on the front page... And now my challenge is YOUR challenge..
The person who posts a picture of their 924/944/951/968/etc. back into this thread (as a link from their website/Rennlist Gallery Page/Rennlist Member site/etc..) - and if it gets selected for the opening picture on the Rennlist site (given the requirements I outlined above) - you get a free one year Rennlist Membership (or an extension on your current membership, if you are a member). One caveat is that you have to own the picture you submit (you can't go "borrow" it from another site - nice try )....
How will you know if you won? Look at the opening Rennlist page early next week....

Hmmm - now how the heck am I s'possed to "extend" your Membership if you win??!!!
OK - if a Rennlist Lifer does win - it's their choice to donate it to another person, or I'll try to find another Rennlist Stainless Coffee mug...
Sound fair??!!!

This is a day, that for me will live in infamy..not only did I create a thread that John D. responded to but also created a contest out of... you have no idea how privileged I feel..
But I have to find humor in the irony that my 944 is in a million little Ziploc bags..and I can't compete....
NOW ON TO OLLI....I may not be a native of the south but down here we have a saying... "Them there be fighting words!"
