i will give you a woman's persective.
My buddy was visiting his folks, his dad blocked his car in the driveway so he grabbed his dad's 90 928 auto and stopped by my house.

My wife had to run an errand and the 938 was blocking her car. She grabbed his keys and ran a few errands.

Came home and parked it in front of the house. Had to run another errand and had a choice of the RX7 convertible, 944S2 or 928.

Im not sure which car she took, but I am sure she didnt take the 928. She didnt like it as much as the other two choices.

easy to tell you are all based stateside.
In the UK gas is currently $9 a gallon and it was depressing to watch my gauge go down every time I revved my 928.
At 12 mpg any long journey makes a serious dent in your finances

An 86 turbo has the one piece crossover so a clutch job is pretty tough.

928 electrics are not too bad if the car has not gotten wet inside or rewired/added on too much.

Cost to maintain and repair depends on the condition and the quality of previous work. Yes the V8 has four more spark plugs but lacks a turbo.

If you are not into automatics why buy one? Wait for the car you want, unless the 944 Turbo is what you want. Check out some 85 or 86 928s with the 32v motor and the better 5 speed. Great cars, tons of power (particularly if chipped) and generally undervalued. IMO the earlier 928 is a bit better looking, they were more subtle and understated before they tacked on bigger, more outrageous turn signals and wings.

928s have some problems but recall the 944 series has the questionable sunroof gears and hatch delamination. When I had a 951 and 944S2 I was always super careful with the sunroof and hatch. IMO also the 951 is a big pain in the rear to work on, the 86 more so.

As a daily driver I prefer the 928 but if you are into modding the 951 is probably a better choice, unless you want 400HP then you want a 32v 928 and a blower (bring money.)

It's more important that you pick the car you want to drive and find a good one (and if you get a bad one, get rid of it before it drags you down to bankruptcy.)

both are great legends

the 928 is more of a classic that gets more respect and is noticed more when you drive it because of its round body shape... people really have no doubt its a porsche, the 928 has a better feel like its an expensive and real world class touring/sports car, the 928 is more collectible in my opinion, the 928 handles great, but is bigger/heavier than the 944

the 951 is the better sports car by far but not as well respected as a porsche, esp by non 944 lovers, the 924/44/51/68 feel a little cheaper in the build, 944 is one of the best drivers cars of all time, just loves to be driven

ive owned two 944's and one 928 that i have now and i think all porsches are great!

Well, I've noticed that if you tell someone that you own (or even thinking of buying) a 928, they look at you as if you are crazy, and keep a respectful distance.
