rebuilt arms/anyone?
Hi Group!
I got some rebuilt control arms and was supprised that even though there was a new grease cover over the ball joint, the metal "stalk" sticking up from the grease cover showed some wear.
When I called the shop that had done the rebuild, they said that it was the ball joint was underneath the part that had been reused (the metal "stalk" with the groove around that the spindle slips over). They said the functional part was the part that was replaced and that it was all right if the "stalk" showed a few marks.
Is this normal for rebuilt control arms not to have this part replaced? Should I be worried?
This is the ball joint for a 944S.
Thanks for your input!!!

The actual ball and stalk are the hardest piece in the whole Ball joint. Everything else is plastic/brass or aluminum so there should never be any wear on the ball itself. The top where the groove is may get some scratches from install but they should cause no mechanical troubles.
You should have no problems with it the way it is.

Jim,
Unless the ball/stalk was binding in some way that cause it damage, it will be fine. The bushings inside take all the wear. Very rarely will be ball be worn at all or even to the point of being unuseable.

Thanks, Guys!!!
I misunderstood what was involved with "rebuilt" control arms and did not understand exactly what a "ball joint" consisted of. I've put in the other arm and front shocks (amazing how much new shocks can help in cornering!). Perhaps will jack up the car again and stick on that other arm this eve!
Again, Many Thanks <img border="0" alt="[bigbye]" title="" src="graemlins/xyxwave.gif" />
