Post brake pad dampening shims

before i sell my beloved 951, i'm going to do the front brakes... i want to go with metalmaster pads because they seem to be quiet, cheap, and good, but i called up sunset just to see what it would cost me to go all oem. they told me that in addition to pads ($55), i would need 4 shims at $3 each and another 4 shims at $13.50 each.

but none of the people i've talked to about ordering any aftermarket pads say i need any shims at all... are these an unessecary part? or something just needed with oem pads? or is this just a really expensive equivalent of spraying some of that anti squeel stuff on the back of the pad before installation?

now that i'm laid off i have to use public computers so i have no way to get on PET and look this stuff up. damn i need a laptop fast.

I just picked up the dampners. They look to be worth it. I talked to my guy at Porsche and he said without them they are going to squeel like a pig...which they are doing... I can understand how these keep the noise to a min.
