What type of oil should I use?
Hey, I have an 84 944 that I use as a daily driver. I live in Santa Cruz, Ca and the climate here is generally in the 70's and 80's during spring. Since I'm not overly concerned about gas mileage I usually keep it revved around 3500-4000 rpm in moderate traffic. Any suggestions on what type of oil I should use? Synthetic? Viscosity? Brand?
Thanks in advance,

Use mobile one.I say this because its the only Gaurenteed synthetic all other brands except something else (I forget its name) the other brands are not a "gaurenteed" synthetic

I have used Mobil 1 exclusively in my daily driver for thelast 5 years. I swear by it. Heavier weight in the summer, lighter in the winter!

I was told to use Castrol GTX. I have only owned this car long enough to do one oil change, so I have only done this once. Should I change to Mobil 1 at next change?

Synthetic in general, make sure its full synthetic. Can't go wrong with Mobil 1. I like Amsoil, its pricey though and with an n/a I probably wouldn't bother.

I used Valvoline Synthetic in my 84 na once and a friend of mine said that that was no good and that the seals were probably not the type that could take a synthetic oil. So I changed over to the dinosaur stuff. Castrol GTX 10w-30 for this winter. So am I wrong here? My car could take full synthetic Mobil 1?? It wouldn't hurt any of the seals in the engine?

As far as partial synthetics go, they aren't a bad alternative at all. They have MOST of the properties of full synthetic and may be friendlier to seals in some cases. I switched to castrol synetec blend 20w50 after 80k with dino and had no leaks. I would definetely recommend this for anybody considering a switch to synthetic.

IMHO, not all 944 cars have the same lubrication needs. The 951 engine is more stressed than an NA and the turbo is more sensitive to contaminated oil, so I use Mobil 1 5W-50 in that car every 3K miles.
Otherwise, for less stressed engines like your '84 or my '83, it's probably just as good to use a decent brand dino oil as long as it gets changed every 3K.
My '83 gets plain Pennzoil 10W-40 changed every 3K and just turned 202K on the original engine.

I use the Bosch-recommended synthetic LiquiMoly 5W40 year round and have not had any problems with seals. I change it twice a year (winters are cold and rough on engines here), do 15,000 km a year, and never have to top up more than 1/2 litre summer, none winter.

Becareful with synthetic oil on older engines. You will increase your chances of it leaking.
I changed to Mobil One and I tried Redline, Amsoil, Valvoline Racing, and all of those LEAKED majorly. Since then I just put Pennzoil in, since we have that at work cheap (free). I'll probably go with a valvoline non synthetic next oil change. It hasn't leaked since the switch.

I am using Mobil 1 in the S2 and used to use it in the turbo. I switched to the castrol Syntec 5-50 in the turbo and it seems to like it better. With the mobil 1 I used to have to add half a quart every 1000 miles or so, with the castrol I haven't had to add any oil yet. I guess that the mobil 1 has different properties than the castrol synthetic. All I know is that the Castrol seems to want to stay in the engine better, and no, I don't have ANY external leaks - it was all coming through the crankcase vent system.
From my view, synthetic is synthetic (yes, I know Castrol Syntec is made from class III basestocks - dino oil), it's much better than anything that these engines had when they were new. That's good enough for me. I change the oil every 3000 miles anyway, it's really cheap insurance.

Castrol Syntec 5w-50 in the winter and 20w-50 for the summer in an NA with 104,000 miles with no significant leakage. End up adding an additional quart over the 5000 miles I go between changes...
