Lifters??

Hey BenzGuy - get a new oil pump sleeve too. It's like $7 and it goes inbetween your oil pump and crank. If you just change the seal, you'll probably still have an oil leak at the crank. You gotta change the sleeve and the seal.

Right no adjustments. Some say that if they are soft when you push on them they are no good.
I had an S that had worn lifter bores, and I had to replace the head to get rid of the click. Maybe it would be worthwhile to pay a top 944 mechanic to diagnose your problem for you.
Might save you some time.

hmm... so these are hydraulic lifters, right?? i'm very mechanical, i'm a computer tech by trade, and have rebuilt an engine or 2. i've replaced about 6-7 engines, and all that jazz... i've just never worked on a porsche 944... mostly mercedes. and a few z engines along with some other jap crap. not a ricer... just had to replace a few engines for my sister. i think i can figure it out, just my haynes manual gives no info, just says "take this to a pro" stupid crap. so i figured someone on here would have the info i need

I had the same noisy lifter problem. Did some research and added a quart of ATF and let the car run for 30 minutes. I pulled the plug to drain the oil and let it drain for 2 hours to get all the crap out. Amazing what the quart of ATF dislodged. Changed the oil and the noise is still there, but not as bad. Going to put some miles on and do it once more since there are a lot of miles on it. Hopefully that will get rid of the ticking sound. I've also heard Mineral Spirits help loosen up the grit and aren't too harmful to the engine. Just make sure and let the used oil drain for a while to get all the gunk out.

I know a ticking sound should be normal unless it gets really loud which is going to cause wear on lifters faster. I maybe wrong so please someone let me know.

hey coolhand, if u had a ticking for only 10 seconds or so, usually it's just dry on oil and it took a few seconds for the oil to get in there, should be no problem. matt
