5 forward speeds, 1 reverse

No, they are still the Audi-based 016 units. The "G"-50 wasn't available until the 968 (6-speed)

Here's an interesting logic progression.

1. Given 944/951 had 016 gearbox
2. Given that 968 had G50 gearbox
3. 968 can use other G50 gearboxes (911)
4. 968's G50 gearbox can be installed on 944/951

Therefore, doesn't it follow that a 944/951 can use ANY G50 gearbox???

Quote from Chris Fisher at Powerhaus II:

"The 968 is not a G-50 gearbox, but is a completely separate gearbox
applicable to the 968 series cars. It is an excellent unit, very beefy and
nicely engineered."

As I remember the diffs are the same in the 968 and G50 boxes so you can use any of those diffs.

per George Beuselinck (PCA WebSite) and the 968 ..."a problem with the pinion bearing preload being too high, causing a premature failure of that bearing"

Just out of curiosity how is the 968 pinion bearing preload set (shims ???). I had quite bit of experience mis-setting the preload on my long departed Volvo 122S <sigh>. The preload was set with shims on the rear wheel bearing carrier. In my case it ruined several wheel bearing before I figgured out how to do it... (which was .004 inch freeplay with a dial indicator after tightened down). --Roy--
