Post Test or Cat Pipe increase in HP

I know this topic has been beat to death but I searched rennlist and can't find the answer to my (probably simple) question.

How much HP increase can I look for if I have a cat pipe installed? I understand it depends on how old and "clogged" my current cat pipe is. My car has 39,000 miles on it.

Also, can someone tell me the difference between a Cat pipe and a Test pipe or are they one and the same?

My mechanic says he'll charge me about $350 total to put the pipe in.

10hp? 5? What do you think?

Call Huntley Racing. They can answer all your questions. But remember...bigger is better!! Spend the extra few dollars and get a three inch pipe!!

One and the same. I guess "test pipe" was a politically correct term to use when you talked about it since you'll be using it to "test".

When I replaced my entire exhuast from the downpipe back with a 3" system, I gained about 1.5psi of boost. Turning that back down to 15psi still gave me less turbo-lag and the boost stayed up in the higher-RPMs.

As for a comparison, check out Steve's Coopers dyno-chart from last weekend's dyno session: NorCal Dyno Day...can ANYTHING be more fun than this?!

He got 256rwhp/278lb-ft torque using our Stage-2 MAP kit and catalytic in place. Our car is configured identically but with a cat-bypass and got 261whp/303lb-ft torque. So the difference is about 5rwhp and 25lb-ft torque. Less HP increase than torque because the stock turbo starts running out of steam in the higher-RPMs.

Wink

I won't promise any HP increase, but I KNOW I did two good things when I went to a test pipe. I shed about 20 LBS and opened up the flow of FLAMES out my tailpipe when I shift near redline, especially noticable between 2 and 3, at night...

You got to love a car with AFTERBURNERS...
